Job description

A Day in the Life

The Commercial Manager is responsible for overseeing commercial origination, trading activities, and business development for a specific location within the grain commodity industry. This role involves leading a team of merchandisers, partnering with Operations Managers to ensure safety and profitability, and driving business growth through strategic planning and customer engagement.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Manage grain origination and trading activities at the location.
  • Execute commercial strategies to meet regional goals for volume, margin, and profitability.
  • Manage facility financials, including budgeting, forecasting, new trades, etc.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to identify opportunities for growth and risk mitigation.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of merchandisers, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture, emphasizing accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Coordinate with location Operations Manager to ensure the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of grain facilities.
  • Collaborate on capacity planning, logistics, and inventory management to meet customer and market demands.
  • Support the implementation of safety programs and ensure adherence to regulatory and company standards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, producers, and industry partners.
  • Negotiate contracts, develop tailored solutions, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Identify & pursue new business opportunities to expand the company's market presence/ increase market share.
Skills / Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree MBA in Marketing, Finance, Ag Business, Ag Economics or Economics is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in grain origination, commodity trading, or related roles, with a strong track record of leadership.
  • Aggressive, self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communications, computer and public relations skills.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills. Experience with P&L management is preferred.
  • Strong problem solving and conceptual thinking capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
