Grafana Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Grafana Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Grafana Engineer, you need a solid background in system monitoring, data visualization, and expertise with time-series databases, typically supported by experience in IT operations or DevOps. Familiarity with Grafana dashboards, Prometheus, InfluxDB, and scripting languages, as well as certifications in cloud platforms or observability tools, are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help engineers translate technical monitoring data into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring system reliability, optimizing performance, and enabling data-driven decision making within complex IT environments.

What is a Grafana Engineer?

A Grafana Engineer is a professional who specializes in setting up, configuring, and maintaining Grafana, which is an open-source platform for monitoring and observability. They design and implement dashboards to visualize data from various sources, integrate Grafana with other systems, and ensure the platform is optimized for performance and security. Grafana Engineers often work closely with DevOps, IT, and development teams to provide actionable insights through real-time data visualization.

What are some common challenges faced by Grafana Engineers when integrating dashboards with diverse data sources?

Grafana Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating dashboards with various data sources, such as ensuring data compatibility, managing authentication methods, and handling differences in data refresh rates. Each data source (like Prometheus, Elasticsearch, or SQL databases) may require distinct configuration and query approaches, which can create complexity in maintaining consistent and reliable dashboards. Effective troubleshooting and staying updated with Grafana plugins and integrations are essential skills to overcome these hurdles and deliver seamless observability solutions.

What is the difference between Grafana Engineer vs Data Engineer?

While both roles involve working with data, a Grafana Engineer specializes in creating visual dashboards for data monitoring, whereas a Data Engineer focuses on designing data pipelines and infrastructure. The roles often collaborate but serve different purposes within data management and analytics.

Job description

This is a fully remote position and we're considering candidates in the US EST.

About Product Management:
As a Product Manager at Grafana Labs, you'll develop a vision and strategy for your product domain. You will own your product's roadmap, collateral, and market research, and you will collaborate with Grafana leadership on fine-tuning your product's goals. You will be the primary advocate and expert in your area, with a strong ability to communicate needs, functionality, and details effectively both to external customers and internal stakeholders. The teams and people you will be interacting with will be 100% remote and globally distributed, so strong and proactive communication is essential.

Product Managers are the bridge that connect Engineering, Design, and UX to GTM. You are a facilitator who ensures the free flow of information across these teams and are expected to be technically proficient when representing our products to our customers.

The opportunity:

As the Senior Product Manager for Infrastructure Observability (Infra O11y) you'll be responsible for our most popular Grafana Cloud products that span the infrastructure suite: Kubernetes Monitoring and Cloud Provider Observability. Infra O11y provides our customers with the ability to easily monitor their core services - from our smallest self-serve customers to our largest enterprise customers.

Your primary responsibility will be to help define the vision and ensure the long-term success of Infra O11y, working with your engineering partners to fine-tune product strategy. You will be charting the path forward for net-new product initiatives - like Host Monitoring - balanced with maintaining a strong roadmap and customer satisfaction for our most mature products.

Your role will require heavy customer discovery, understanding user needs, and building consensus and alignment across several Engineering groups and many stakeholders as we look towards simplifying our broader Infra O11y experience for Grafana Cloud. You will also need to flex your GTM muscles and build conviction in areas like competitive analysis and sales enablement to better inform activities like pricing and packaging.

Beyond driving your individual product area, you'll also need to ensure that the experiences you're building are tightly woven into our overall Grafana Cloud suite of products, by establishing integration touchpoints with other key offerings like Grafana Cloud Knowledge Graph and Grafana Assistant, so that our customers have a seamless monitoring experience where they can easily navigate between different layers of their architecture through guided explorations and natural language.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Transform ideas and feedback into a product vision and roadmap
  • Empathize with customer problems in order to collect user needs, requirements, and pain points
  • Curate and properly represent user feedback to Engineering, while providing evidence to support tradeoffs and priorities
  • Work closely with PMM to enable GTM on product differentiation, including creating and updating presentations, documentation, website content, datasheets, and whitepapers.
  • Use your deep product expertise to make decisions about our go-to-market strategies, pricing, packaging, licensing and tiering
What makes you a great fit:
  • A BS/BA in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 7+ years of experience in Product Management
  • 5+ years of experience in a B2B SaaS product
  • Experience using or building developer-facing tools, APIs, or platform services
  • Ability to discuss APIs, data models, schema evolution, and distributed systems concepts
  • Experience driving adoption of shared services or platform capabilities across multiple product teams
  • Experience working with Engineering and Design teams build delightful products and features - with sounds UX - in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with open source software and/or commercial open source companies
  • Experience using or building observability products and/or developer tools, either internally as an SRE or for external customers
  • Proficient with infrastructure concepts and components - like Kubernetes, Cloud Service Providers, and VMs - and able to articulate these models in human-readable terms
  • Experience with AI tools

In the United States, the base compensation range for this role is $162,275 - $194,730. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed throughout the interview process. All of our roles include Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), giving every team member ownership in Grafana Labs' success. We believe in shared outcomes-RSUs help us stay aligned and invested as we scale globally.
