Graduate Teaching Intern information

What is a graduate teaching intern?

Graduate Teaching Interns are graduate students, often pursuing a master's or doctoral degree, who assist faculty members with teaching responsibilities at colleges or universities. Their duties may include leading discussion sections, grading assignments, holding office hours, and sometimes delivering lectures under supervision. This role provides valuable teaching experience while supporting faculty in managing large classes. Graduate Teaching Internships can also help students develop communication and instructional skills that are useful in academic or professional careers.

What are some common challenges graduate teaching interns face when balancing teaching responsibilities with their own coursework?

Graduate Teaching Interns often juggle multiple responsibilities, including leading discussion sections, grading assignments, and holding office hours, all while managing their own academic workload. Time management becomes crucial to ensure that teaching duties do not interfere with their progress in graduate courses and research. Effective communication with faculty supervisors, prioritizing tasks, and setting clear boundaries with students can help interns navigate these challenges and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate teaching intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Teaching Intern, you need a solid academic background in your subject area, often coupled with enrollment in or completion of a graduate program. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), presentation software, and basic classroom technology is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and adaptability help you engage students and collaborate with faculty effectively. These skills and qualities are essential for supporting student learning, managing classroom responsibilities, and contributing positively to the academic environment.
