| Aspect | Graduate Rn Residency Program | Registered Nurse |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Completion of nursing degree, participation in residency | Licensed RN, passing NCLEX |
| Work Environment | Structured training in hospitals or clinics | Full-time clinical practice in healthcare settings |
| Purpose | Transition from student to independent nurse | Provide patient care independently |
The Graduate Rn Residency Program is a structured transition program for new nursing graduates, focusing on skill development and mentorship. In contrast, a Registered Nurse is a licensed professional providing direct patient care. The residency program prepares nurses for independent practice, while RNs are already practicing professionals. Both roles are essential in healthcare, but the residency is a temporary, educational phase.

Introduction
Nashville General Hospital's mission is to improve the health and wellness of Nashville by providing equitable access to coordinated patient centered care, supporting tomorrow's caregivers, and translating science into clinical practice.
The nurse residency program promotes the mission of Nashville General Hospital, because supporting the nurse resident is supporting tomorrow's caregivers. Furthermore, the nurse residency program will empower the nurse resident to translate the science of nursing into a developing professional nursing practice that will positively contribute to the health and wellness of the Nashville community.
Overview
Nashville General Hospital's 9-month Nurse Residency Program (NRP) has been designed for all new Associate's and Bachelor's degree graduate nurses who have passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) or a new registered nurse with less than 6 months of experience. The Division of Nursing of Nashville General Hospital (NGH) has adopted the nurse residency program and the preceptor model for orientation and integration to the different specialty departments.
It is our goal to assist nurse residents to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that will enable successful transition from the role of a student nurse to the practice role of the professional nurse. It is the aim of the NRP to provide the education, training, and support crucial to the provision of safe, quality care in a collaborative environment that contributes to positive patient outcomes.
Nursing orientation will provide a solid foundation. You will develop confidence and competence in areas such as clinical nursing skills, communication, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork to successfully meet the standards of practice and the professional performance expectations of the Nursing Division of Nashville General Hospital. Your orientation will concentrate on your successful integration into the healthcare team.
Through the common vision shared by Nursing Leadership, the Nursing Education and Professional Development Department and the Preceptor Team, we will guide your transition to professional practice by supporting your orientation and ongoing professional development.
What our Nurse Residency Program Offers or What We Provide
Start date options vary based on area hired and successful NCLEX completion.
Our nurse residency program offers employment and training in the following specialty areas that allows nurse residents to work in an area that matches their practice interests and goals: Cardiac/Telemetry, Med/Surg, and LDRP based on unit needs. For those nurse residents unsure of the specialty practice to which they want to commit, they will be offered a clinical rotation through the specialty areas to enable the resident to choose the area that best fits their interests.
The nurse residency program will consist of:
- A one-day general hospital orientation hosted by Human Resources
- A 10-day Nursing: CORE Orientation to introduce you to general nursing standards, policies and procedures, nursing skills and the electronic health record.
- The preceptorship will introduce you to unit specific content and skill development. (length of preceptorship varies by unit and generally lasts 12-16 weeks).
- Throughout the 9-month nurse residency program, the nurse resident cohort will attend monthly workshops focused on leadership, professional role, and patient outcomesThese monthly workshops are a REQUIREMENT to be part of the Nurse Residency Program.
- Identification and development of a unit-based performance improvement project will be required, and successful completion of the nurse residency program will conclude with the presentation of the project to the nursing division.
- After the completion of the initial preceptorship, a mentor will be assigned each shift as a resource and support to the newly transitioned to service nurse resident for 8 weeks.
