THP is a multi-site organization that includes the Credit Valley Hospital (CVH), Mississauga Hospital (MH) and the Queensway Health Care Centre (QHC).  The surgical program provides complex surgical services including orthopedics, general surgery, vascular surgery, urology and ophthalmology for our community.

 The Surgical Physician Assistant is a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program and is certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada. The incumbent will be assigned to either the Mississauga or Credit Valley Hospital Site. This position will support general surgery patients admitted to the Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital.  

 This position reports to the Director, Surgery and Peri-Operative Programs;  reports to the Head of the division of General Surgery for medical performance and works under the direction of the a supervising general surgeon at Mississauga Hospital or Credit Valley Hospital.  

The PA role and responsibilities will include:

  • Performing comprehensive and problem-focused histories, physical examinations, patient screening, and appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies in the emergency room patients
  • Conducting daily hospital rounds, evaluating post-operative patients, assisting with discharge planning, and facilitating patient referral to the appropriate physician or agency
  • Conducting routine follow-up visits with patients, returning phone calls from patients, and managing prescription refills
  • Assisting with surgical procedures and performing minor procedures on the unit after a skills assessment and satisfactory performance evaluation, including removing surgical drains, inserting and removing Foley catheters, inserting and removing nasogastric tubes, applying superficial stitches/skin staples, performing dressing changes, administering first doses of medications such as labetolol, and other procedures as deemed appropriate. These procedures will be initiated under a direct order or medical directive by a supervising surgeon.  
  • Upon completion of formal and informal education and documented competency, prescribing/ordering specific medications, but not narcotics, as delegated by the supervising physician. 
  • Working collaboratively with an interprofessional team, including but not limited to surgeons, interventional radiology, residents/interns/medical students, nurse practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, and laboratory personnel.
