QualificationsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, often with licensure options
Work EnvironmentEntry-level roles in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and technologyDesign, analysis, and manufacturing in industries like automotive, aerospace, and energy
Employer UsageEmployers hire graduate engineers for training and development programsEmployers seek mechanical engineers for product design, testing, and maintenance

Graduate Engineering is an entry-level role for those with an engineering degree, often across multiple disciplines, while Mechanical Engineering is a specialized field focusing on designing and manufacturing mechanical systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in focus and career paths.

What jobs do engineering graduates get?

Engineering graduates can pursue roles such as civil, mechanical, electrical, software, or chemical engineers. These positions often require knowledge of technical tools, problem-solving skills, and sometimes professional certifications, and they are typically found in industries like manufacturing, technology, construction, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering, strong analytical abilities, and a solid grasp of engineering principles. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as any relevant certifications, is highly beneficial. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help set you apart in collaborative and fast-paced project environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering innovative solutions and contributing effectively to engineering projects.

What can a graduate engineer do?

A graduate engineer can perform tasks such as designing, analyzing, and testing engineering systems within their field, often under supervision. They may work with tools like CAD software, follow safety protocols, and pursue professional certifications to advance their careers.

What is a graduate engineer?

A graduate engineer is someone who has recently completed an engineering degree, typically a bachelor's or master's, and is starting their professional career in the engineering field. They usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers while gaining practical experience and developing their technical and professional skills. Graduate engineers often participate in structured graduate programs, which may include rotations through different departments or projects. These roles are designed to help them transition from academic study to full professional responsibility.

What types of projects can a Graduate Engineer expect to work on during their first year?

As a Graduate Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that may include supporting senior engineers with design, analysis, testing, or implementation tasks. Early in your career, you might participate in rotations across different departments or disciplines, allowing you to gain exposure to multiple areas such as project management, field work, or research and development. Typically, you'll work as part of a collaborative team, contributing to both short-term assignments and longer-term projects while receiving mentorship and feedback. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build technical skills, understand organizational processes, and identify your preferred career path within engineering.

Job description

Overview
This position is located in St. Marys, Georgia.
Overhaul and Repair Engineering (O&RE) is a large organization that supports the top U.S. Navy priority of fleet readiness by accomplishing overhaul, repair, and modernization work on active duty SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, OHIO, and LOS ANGELES class submarines. The organization is involved with all aspects of a project starting with planning and development of technical work documents through supporting final system test and ship certification at Electric Boat's shipyard and various off-site U.S. Navy shipyards and facilities. Frequent opportunities exist to travel to other submarine repair facilities in support of Electric Boat contracted fleet maintenance work.
Overhaul and Repair Engineering is cognizant of almost all systems and components on a submarine, functioning as a dynamic multi-discipline team involving electrical systems, mechanical/piping systems, and structural components. In order to accomplish its mission, the U.S. Navy needs to minimize the time submarines spend in the shipyard being repaired which requires work to be performed in shifts to maximize progress made each day. This posting is focused on applicants seeking to provide real-time creative, technical leadership and problem resolution to skilled trades working the afternoon / evening shift, directly impacting the submarine's ability to return to sea. This includes guidance on navigating unforeseen shipboard conditions; tailoring work procedures to meet unique configurations; and accounting for the realities of fabrication, manufacturing, installation, and testing of shipboard systems and equipment.
Common Electrical Systems
  • Non-propulsion electronic systems, including fly-by-wire ship control, weapons launch control, navigation, sonar, instrumentation and indications
  • Power distribution, electrical methods, electrical hull penetrators, and electromechanical actuation.
  • Voice communications, interior communication circuits, and fiber-optic data distribution.

Common Mechanical/Piping Systems
  • Valves, actuators, main condensers/heat exchangers, pipe and machinery fabrication and welding.
  • Weapons and countermeasure launching, steering and diving, hatch operability, masts and antennas, shaft and propulsion, hydraulics, and compressed air.

Common Structural Components
  • Pressure hull boundary and non-pressure hull boundary ship structures
  • Structure fabrication and welding
  • Submarine coating and cathodic protection
  • Non-metallic coverings and treatments

O&RE operates in a collaborative and fast paced manner to ensure safety, stealth, maneuverability, and habitability of a submarine are maintained to the highest level. Engineers interface consistently with other Electric Boat departments including scheduling, quality assurance, material sourcing, contracts, cost engineering, system testing, operations skilled trades, and project management as well as U.S. Navy submariners. On the job training as well as training under more experienced engineers or subject matter experts will be provided.
Job responsibilities:
  • Planning of submarine maintenance, repair, and modernization work through the development of clear and concise procedures contained in technical work documents. This includes interpretation of shipbuilding specifications, military specifications and standards, maintenance requirements, construction drawings, and contractual requirements.
  • Providing in-person proactive support to shipyard execution efforts onboard submarines and throughout the shipyard.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting to provide timely technical resolutions for execution roadblocks.
  • Collaborating with O&RE system engineers as well as interfacing departments to ensure compliance with Shipyard and U.S. Navy procedures.
  • Evaluating technical rationale to support the approval of non-conforming conditions.
  • Supporting test and certification of systems impacted by the technical work documents.
  • Assisting with off-site projects at various Electric Boat and U.S. Navy facilities.
  • Developing an understanding of specific non-nuclear areas and systems of a submarine identified in the technical work documents.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering
  • 1-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience.
  • The ability to obtain Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.
  • Willingness to travel and support extended off-site assignments as needed.

Preferred:
  • An active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • The flexibility to support critical work and schedule needs in a supportive team environment.

Skills
  • A strong ability to solve technical problems.
  • Aptitude for learning and applying technical requirements.
  • Candidates must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders to enter submarine and dry-docks, ascend/descend scaffolding, and enter confined spaces.
  • Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively collaborate with a wide range of internal and external organizations at multiple levels of management.
  • Candidates must be highly motivated and well organized with strong project management skills and be capable of working both independently and in a team environment.
  • The candidate must have a strong fundamental understanding of engineering concepts and basic understanding of relationship between electronic, mechanical/piping, and structural systems/components.
