Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Coach provides excellent customer service while managing the swim team and assisting with the production of quality swim team programs. The Swim Coach creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with the Rappahannock Area Family YMCA.? This position creates positive, nurturing relationships with swimmers, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers.
?Positions are available for Head Swim Coach, Assistant Swim Coach and Swim Coach.? We are hiring each coach for the Fall/Winter season and for the Summer season.?
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform assigned coaching responsibilities, including practices, recruiting, recordkeeping and scheduling.
  • Lead swimmers through skill mastery and swim practices to achieve higher level of technique.
  • Teach participants how to perform skills correctly. Design tailored workouts for the various levels of abilities and strengths using the YCF Swim Team Progression Plan.
  • Coordinate and set up swim meets. Collaborate with parents and members to secure volunteers to assist in running swim meets.
  • Supervise swim meets, including warm-ups, practice dives, etc., to ensure the safety of the swimmers.
  • Coordinate and schedule times for swim practices with the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Communicate practice times with Family Center staff, members and parents.
  • Greet and develop effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Assist in the retention of existing members and engagement of new members by informing them of the Family Center aquatic
  • programs, including Safe Start, lap swimming, swim lessons, swim team and group exercise classes.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Know, understand and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Know and review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the Rappahannock Area Family YMCA
  • policies and procedures.
  • Attend all staff meetings, monthly in-services and trainings as required.
  • Promote and represent the mission and core values of the Rappahannock Area Family YMCA and its programs.
  • All other duties assigned by Management.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
To be successful, you must meet education, training and experience requirements, and you must be able to demonstrate some critical knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (Professional Rescuer CPR with AED) and First Aid or the ability to receive preferred receive a certification within 30 days.
  • Current YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming preferred or the ability to receive a certification within 30 days
  • Current Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches preferred or the ability to receive a certification within 30 days
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent follow through actions regarding communication.
  • Desire and ability to work with people of all ages.
  • Demonstrated responsibility and dependability.
  • Must exhibit patience, sensitivity and understanding.

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • 3 years of previous swim coaching experience preferred
  • USA Swimming Coach Certification or the ability to acquire it within 60 days

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • 1 year previous swim coaching experience preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to regularly work flexible hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have the ability to pass a swimming skills test.
  • May be required to sit, stand or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time including continuous physical endurance

for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic activity.
  • May be required to work outdoors for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme outdoor weather conditions and

temperatures and to wet and/or humid conditions in swimming pool areas.
  • Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind. Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor

environment and members' well-being.
  • Must possess auditory, verbal and visual capabilities in order to adequately communicate via phone and in person.
