Summary

The Grading Superintendent supervises a crew of operators and grade checkers in the company grading operations by performing the following duties. This role requires experience in roadway and/or highway construction, including knowledge of DOT standards, highway embankment construction, and subgrade preparation.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assess job priorities and assign crew to appropriate tasks to meet deadlines and production schedules.
  • Reads and follows plans, material lists and guidelines, and applies necessary timelines.
  • Conducts daily stretch, flex, and safety toolbox talks with crew.
  • Fulfills all regular and advanced construction duties, including project layout, and completes regular paperwork promptly.
  • Trains employees to complete projects within established guidelines and timeframes.
  • Enforces all company, and client-required, safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintains relationships with Clarkson customers, General Contractors, Engineers, Suppliers, and Government Officials.
  • Interacts with departments within Clarkson to keep business moving efficiently: Safety, Project Managers, Accounting, Human Resources, Shop, and others.
  • Work and communicate calmly under pressure and high-stress situations to achieve solutions.
  • Submit crew members' time using company-provided software and iPads daily.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, stand; Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Education, Skills & Experience

  • Prior experience in roadway and/or highway construction, including mass grading, DOT specifications, plan interpretation, and coordination on large transportation projects.
  • Ability to accurately read plans and specifications to perform and verify a quality work review.
  • Ability to understand job constrains and budgets as projects are executed to profitably close the job.
  • Ability to work independently with little instructions.
  • Self-motivated with strong time management skills to ensure employees and job requirements are both satisfied.
  • Capable of remaining organized while multi-tasking.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current grading equipment capabilities and the desire to learn about new ones.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet Search).
  • Basic phone skills (calls, reading and responding to emails and texts).
  • Able to travel within local areas.
  • Must be dependable and willing to report to work on time.
  • Ability to work extended hours during the construction season.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
