Senior Heavy Equipment Operator


Primary Responsibilities:
ย ย  ย 

Senior Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment used in construction, roadway maintenance, landscaping, grounds maintenance, excavation, and related operations. This position serves as a lead operator, providing guidance to team members, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and performing routine inspections and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operate commercial vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including refuse dump trucks, flatbeds, and equipment transport trailers.
  2. Safely operate heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, backhoes, skid steers, rollers, and other specialized machinery.
  1. Transport equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites and landfill.
  2. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete required documentation.
  3. Perform daily equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrication, and minor repairs.
  4. Read and interpret work orders and project specifications as needed.
  5. Lead and assist crews in construction, maintenance, grading, excavation, landscaping, and grounds projects.
  6. Ensure work is completed efficiently and in accordance with safety standards and project requirements.
  7. Identify and report equipment malfunctions, hazards, and repair needs.
  8. Monitor and maintain equipment operating logs, fuel records, and maintenance reports.
  9. Assist with emergency response activities such as storm cleanup, debris removal, and road restoration.
  10. Train and mentor junior equipment operators and laborers.
  11. Maintain compliance with DOT, OSHA, company, and local regulatory requirements.
  12. Perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to support team.
  13. Assist with fueling all commercial vehicles in fleet.

Other Duties:

  1. Assist other positions in the department.
  2. Keep work area and golf course clean; pick-up rubbish.
  3. May direct lower rated positions in the department.

  1. Work outdoors in various weather conditions

Work Hours:

  1. Must be able to work shift and days determined by the manager.
  2. Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week, when needed.

Equipment Use:

  1. Utility vehicle
  2. On occasion must operate one or more of the following equipment: backhoe, refuse dumpster, transport, tree trimmer boom truck and other large equipment.
  3. May operate one or more of the following equipment; rough mower, fairway mower, triplex mower or sprayer.
  4. Various power equipment such as air cushion mower weedeater, edger, blower and power saw.
  5. Various landscape maintenance hand tools such as shears, pick, weeder, lopper, hand saw, rake, water hose shovel and hedge trimmer.

Mental and Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to work outdoors in the sun and/or wind for most of shift.
  2. Ability to climb in/out of equipment, sit and drive equipment while operating gears and foot pedals during most of shift.
  3. Ability to use hand and power tools when assisting other positions.ย 
  4. Ability to operate equipment used by equipment operators.
  5. Bend and stoop to inspect vehicles and equipment.
  6. Able to lift, carry, push or pull up to and over 50 lbs. of tools, equipment or other supplies

Communication Demands:

  1. Must have the ability to communicate verbally to employees and manager.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  1. Special CDL license required to operate commercial vehicles on private, county and state highways and roadways.
  1. Safely operate heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, backhoes, skid steers, rollers, and other specialized machinery.
  1. 3 years' work-related experience.
  2. Driverโ€™s safety certification required by DOT
  3. Must provide a valid driver's license and a clean driving abstract (no moving violations in the past 5 years).
