Job description

What You'll Do

As a Special Education Teacher, you will design and implement classroom educational programming including academics, daily living skills, community safety and engagement, social skills and transitional planning to enable students to make progress towards an LRE or successful independent adult placements.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Creating and delivering daily, weekly, monthly and other lessons and units aligned with state curriculum standards and meeting minimum requirements for minutes of instruction
  • Designing a classroom environment that is both motivating and stimulating for students
  • Classroom work that includes all academic content areas aligned with the common core curriculum, daily living skills, behavioral support, social skills, community skills and integration, vocational skills and emotional development
  • Providing lessons and units upon request for review
  • Providing lessons and units in an accessible format for substitute teachers
  • Completing periodic progress monitoring of IEP goals between marking periods to inform quarterly progress notes
  • Completing thorough and appropriate non-academic documentation including communication logs, behavioral tracking, Restrictive Intervention Applications and Notable Event Reports
  • Monitoring, supporting and reporting to administration on the work, effort, affect, skills and implementation of treatment and academic programming by the teacher aides and assistants in the classroom. Assisting with staff evaluations as requested
  • Maintaining and reporting on periodic progress documentation for each pupil and attend CSE, ITT, psychiatric rounding and other treatment meetings on each student at appropriate intervals during the school year
  • Completing all required CSE and other paperwork (behavior tracking, RIAs, Notables, Community Contact Forms, parent notification documentation, etc...) in a timely and effective manner
  • Implementing behavioral support system, as approved by treatment team and consistent with Department of Education Regulations
  • Utilizing SCIP-R physical interventions on an emergency basis for the protection of staff and students
  • Assuring that accurate attendance records are maintained and are to be submitted appropriately prior to the completion of each month
  • Submitting monthly and/or quarterly reports to appropriate parties
  • Maintaining regular communication with each family and service provider for each student
  • Contacting each family for each use of an emergency intervention in the timeline consistent with agency policy and part 200 regulations
  • Maintaining weekly contact with all families to provide updates on academic and other progress and share important accomplishments of the student
  • Attending school-specific and Agency-related staff and/or parent meetings as required
  • Attending all professional development and staff meetings as required by supervisor
  • Ensuring that all students are always supervised by a responsible individual who is a paid employee of the agency consistent with the school-wide or other established level of supervision for each student
  • Developing a working relationship and high level of collaboration with the residential and clinical team members as well as the family and any outside service providers
  • Transporting students to and from group residence, activities, field trips, work sites, etc.  
  • Ensuring students attend all medication passes and medical appointments and do not miss those requirements due to field trips or other conflicts

You're a great fit for this role if you have:

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university (required)
  • Valid US driver's license (required)
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience and/or master's degree preferred
  • Current and valid New York State (NYS) special education teaching certification
  • Current and valid Grade 7-12 Special Education NYSED teaching certification preferred

Compensation & Benefits 

  • Compensation: $60,000 - $65,000/yr + $3,000 bonus (for successful candidates and paid out at 3 months and at 6 months)
