Job description

Lochmueller Group is seeking a Licensed Professional Surveyor (PS) to lead and support survey operations on small to mid-sized projects of limited to moderate complexity throughout the state of Indiana. This role combines technical expertise, client interaction, and mentorship, with opportunities to contribute to both field and office-based survey activities.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative professional who applies sound judgment, adheres to state regulations, and consistently delivers high-quality surveying services.

Our Roadway/Highway Design team is involved in a wide variety of street, roadway, highway and multi-modal transportation design projects for local public agencies and state DOT's.

Key Responsibilities:
Survey Leadership & Field Operations
  • Serve as Lead Surveyor on assigned survey crews for boundary, route, topographic, construction staking, construction verification, and horizontal/vertical control surveys.
  • Plan, coordinate, evaluate, and oversee a wide range of field survey tasks.
  • Conduct pre-survey and pre-mission planning, including GPS survey planning, data processing, adjustment, and QA/QC.
  • Oversee daily crew assignments, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to project schedules.
  • Monitor and enforce proper survey techniques, equipment usage, safety protocols, and quality standards.
Technical & Office Responsibilities
  • Conduct research of public records, including deeds, plats, survey references, and other documentation.
  • Analyze property lines and boundaries; prepare boundary descriptions, Surveyor's Reports, and related documentation.
  • Prepare data for CAD handoff or perform CAD drafting tasks to produce survey drawings and plats.
  • Organize and maintain complete project files (electronic and hardcopy).
  • Apply Indiana surveying laws, standards, specifications, and best practices to all work assignments.
  • Perform office-based work involving computer use, document review, and coordination with project teams.
Client & Team Collaboration
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients, project managers, public officials, and external agencies.
  • Attend meetings with clients and public officials as required.
  • Lead or contribute to pre-survey planning discussions to scope and strategize survey projects.
  • Oversee work of assigned team members and provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior staff.
  • Build and maintain professional working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Licensed Professional Surveyor (PS)
  • Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying or another approved degree with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant field experience with a strong foundation in boundary, topographic, and construction surveying.
  • Proficiency in:
    • GPS survey methods and data processing
    • Survey equipment (total stations, GPS receivers, levels)
    • CAD software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Coordinate geometry
    • Survey measurement adjustment software
    • Indiana land surveying laws, regulations, and professional standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability and willingness to travel to project sites.
  • Ability to work outdoors in developed and undeveloped areas under varying weather conditions, with physical requirements including walking, staking, and lifting up to 50-75 pounds.

  • Candidates must be able to drive to various project sites and meeting locations throughout Indiana.
