The City of Troy is a thriving community that is diverse, dynamic, and committed to providing a high quality of life. The Communications Department increases community awareness and involvement in programs, services, and community events. Staff shares information with public officials, residents, visitors, the business community, and City employees, utilizing all means of communication. This position reports to the Communications Director.
DUTIES
• Work closely with all Communications staff to support the overall mission of the City of Troy through consistent, clear, and creative communication best practices.
• Write proclamations, press releases, informational materials, correspondence, and other items. Update information as needed on City communications channels.
• Assist with the scheduling of City Council-related events and the corresponding public communication.
• Assist with the creation of newsletters, flyers, brochures, social media posts, cable TV slides, and ads for local newspapers.
• Field questions from the public and assist in finding the appropriate resources.
• Assist with the coordination and promotion of community events, as needed.
• Create systems to streamline content management and outside requests.
• Greet department visitors and answer phones. Answer questions regarding City services, community events, and general information.
• Assist as needed with City-wide communication initiatives.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Graphic Design or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Two (2) years of recent full-time (or four (4) years of recent part-time) Marketing, Communications, or public relations work experience.
• Candidates with an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other Creative Cloud products.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with residents, elected officials, employees, and professional contacts.
• Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing, and make presentations to internal and external groups.
• Ability to work in a collaborative, dynamic, fast-paced environment, using excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• A valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record. Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of hire date.
• As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a background check and pre-employment physical including drug screen, including marijuana.
PREFERENCES
• Knowledge of non-profit or government marketing and communications methods.
HOURS Part-time, year-round. 20 hours per week, preferably Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm; scheduled days/times are flexible within range
