Does Google X still exist?

Google X was a semi-secret research and development facility operated by Alphabet Inc., focusing on innovative projects. In 2019, Google X was rebranded as X, a division of Alphabet dedicated to moonshot technologies, and it continues to work on advanced, high-impact projects. The division remains active and is involved in developing cutting-edge technologies such as self-driving cars and renewable energy solutions.

What types of projects do team members typically work on at X, and how is cross-functional collaboration structured?

At X, team members often work on ambitious, early-stage projects known as 'moonshots' that aim to solve big global challenges through breakthrough technology. Project teams are highly interdisciplinary, bringing together experts from fields like engineering, research, operations, and design. Collaboration is fostered through regular cross-functional meetings, shared workspaces, and a culture that encourages open idea sharing and rapid prototyping. This environment helps employees not only develop specialized skills but also gain exposure to new domains, making it a unique place for both personal and professional growth.

Job description

Company Description
Mercator is building AI agents that coordinate global supply chains. Today's systems leak $1.7T in waste each year in retail alone - in overproduction, lost revenue, and unnecessary emissions.
Mercator's founders are seasoned technical operators with a decade of experience leading cutting-edge AI and simulation efforts across Google (Gemini, Tensorflow, & Google X). We recently raised $5M in seed funding from leading Silicon Valley investors and are scaling our small, elite engineering team to meet growing customer demand.
Role Description
As a member of our full-stack team, you'll build the interface that brings our simulation platform to life and redefines what usability looks like in a category historically dominated by Excel. You'll design and ship consumer-grade experiences that make complex operational decisions feel simple, intuitive, and fast. A major part of this role is driving mindset and behavior change through UX: helping users shift from static spreadsheets to interactive, scenario-driven systems.
You'll work directly with customers to understand real workflows, translate them into modern product patterns, and own the full stack across Next.js and NestJS. A critical part of the job is listening carefully to what customers ask for, recognizing when requests point in the wrong direction, and extracting the underlying workflow problem they're actually trying to solve.
You'll collaborate closely with the engineer building our simulation engine to ensure advanced system output becomes clear, actionable, and trustworthy. You'll be defining not just our product, but the way an entire industry interacts with operational data.
Benefits
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • As a company we'll work from a fun destination (think: skiing, surfing) two weeks a year

Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization. We are able to support H-1B transfers but are not initiating new visa sponsorships at this time.
