Job description

TITLE: Transportation Dispatcher

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Transportation Dispatcher plays a central role in the transportation office, helping to ensure the safe, efficient, and equitable transportation of Portland Public Schools students throughout the year. Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation and in close consultation with key stakeholders, the Dispatcher has primary responsibility for covering communication support over phone and radio to ensure safe and efficient transportation. The Dispatcher also provides support for routing and trip scheduling, maintenance, and record keeping, accident investigations, payments/billing, and documenting behavior reports. The Dispatcher is a frontline team member that provides support to transportation staff and positively engages with schools, other offices, and families to build positive relationships throughout the district.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Organization and time management capability
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Ability to stay calm in fast-paced situations
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of Google applications and Microsoft Office software and willingness to learn other technology applications
  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the City of Portland

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or associate's degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least one year of related work preferred
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Rules and Regulations preferred
  • Class B CDL with air brake, passenger/cargo, and S endorsements, or willingness to obtain, preferred but not required

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info - cost is $70)

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • Schedule: Year-round, full-time, 1.0 FTE position
  • Assignment: Permanent
  • Wage range: $26.44-$31.25
  • Overtime: Eligible for overtime
  • Contract: Non-represented
