Job description

iFixit is currently seeking a Junior Technical Writer to create unparalleled repair documentation for consumer electronics, power equipment, and other products. The ideal candidate is technically oriented, has a passion for succinct communication, knows their way around a camera, and loves to take things apart.

What you'd be doing:

  • Disassembling consumer electronics (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.), power equipment (lawnmowers, power tools, etc.), and other serviceable devices.
  • Taking photos and carefully documenting every step of the repair procedure.
  • Editing photos to give them that classic iFixit look and feel.
  • Writing repair documentation, pairing it with photos for each step of the disassembly process.
  • Moderating community-contributed repair guides, edits, and updates.
  • Helping create other content, like writing blog posts, assisting with teardowns, and more!

As the ideal candidate, you should:

  • Enjoy tinkering and fixing stuff! You probably have a toolbox at home, and while you love having the right tool for the job, you've made do on more than one occasion.
  • Enjoy documenting and writing instructions. Each and every step of a repair procedure needs to be meticulously documented and clearly explained to people who may have never fixed something before.
  • Have above-average mechanical and/or electrical aptitude. You don't need to be an engineer, but a basic understanding of how a smartphone works goes a long way.
  • Possess a basic knowledge and understanding of photography. Experience with Adobe Photoshop and a DSLR is a big plus!
  • Have impeccable grammar and an obsessive attention to detail.
  • Keep up with news about consumer electronics and new technologies.
  • Enjoy working with people and communicating with coworkers precisely and accurately.
  • Feel compelled to combine creativity with pragmatism in your photography and writing.
  • Have a sense of humor, a can-do attitude, and be ready to come to work and learn.

Background on iFixit:

We are the leading internet destination for repair, and the champions of the Right to Repair political movement. Our work is reshaping the electronics industry, and manufacturers are rapidly shifting to build repair supply chains. We're going to provide the logistics and technology they need to do so.

iFixit is an ambitious organization: We are an e-commerce company, a how-to instruction publisher, a tool maker, and a public advocate.

We provide repair supply chain support to Microsoft, Google, Motorola, Samsung, Logitech, and more. We provide technician training for Home Depot's power tool rental fleet. iFixit is the largest online resource for hospital equipment repair information.

Our ambition is nothing short of making repair the default, rather than replacement. We are a catalyst shifting the world to a circular economy, and we need your help to do it.

iFixit's Expansion to Chattanooga:

Our roots are in the California technology startup world, but our passion is tinkering. We are thrilled to be joining the making and manufacturing culture of Tennessee.

We are excited to be building our eastern distribution hub and headquarters. We are building a 50,000 square foot flagship location blocks from downtown in the historic Onion Bottom neighborhood on 12th street. The facility will be operational in late Spring, and we are hiring the startup team now.

Read more about our plans.

This is an hourly position available locally at our Chattanooga, TN office. Willingness to travel (regularly to our San Luis Obispo, CA location) is a must.

iFixit is an awesome place to work. Here are some of our perks:

    • A career where you will be actively working to make the world better.
    • A work laptop, and any software you need.
    • Full benefits package. Competitive medical, dental, vision and life insurance with generous employer contribution. Plus a stipend toward coverage for your dependent(s).
    • 401k plan with 4% employer match.
    • Flexible vacation time + paid holidays.
    • Dependent Care FSA.
    • Generous stipends towards repair & wellness.
    • $400 towards a bike or alternative method of transportation.
    • A sweet pair of headphones to get your head in the game.
    • Employee discounts on parts and tools.
    • Charitable contribution matching! We'll 100% match your tax deductible donations.

    Diversity Statement:

When you go to a website like iFixit and scroll through the guides, it's easy to forget that there are tons of real people keeping all those bits and bytes running smoothly. But there are literally dozens of us! We're a diverse team, split between two continents-but we're united by a love of tinkering and repair.

iFixit is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Because we are trying to teach everyone to fix everything, we need a team as diverse as our online community. We believe that it takes people of all backgrounds to help us fix the world. Therefore, iFixit does not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, reproductive health decision making, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, or any of the other important characteristics that make us unique and valuable. iFixit participates in E-Verify.

iFixit is committed to creating a diverse team-not only in who we hire-but through creating a supportive environment for all of our team members based on mutual respect and inclusivity.

    To apply:

Send us a PDF of your resume, as well as a PDF cover letter explaining two things: why you're a badass, and why you're the ideal candidate for the job. We look forward to hearing from you!
