Job description

Mission Summary:The Mission Support Specialist is a hands-on role that is essential for the Fleet Operations team, providing crucial operational support to ensure Motional's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Fleet is mission ready, well-maintained, and supported in the field. Reporting to the Fleet Management Supervisor, daily responsibilities include facilitating fleet readiness activities such as AV boot-up (along with associated troubleshooting), calibration support, field recovery, and software updates to AV Fleet resources. Working closely with Fleet Coordinators, Calibration Specialists, and AV Testing Supervisors, this position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards and operational efficiency at all times.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections for operational readiness.
  • Perform tasks such as cleaning and vehicle pre-checks for mission deployment.
  • Perform AV system startup (bring-up) and shutdown procedures.
  • Communicate, resolve, and/or escalate vehicle issues in accordance with SOPs and workflows.
  • Perform Platform Safety Checks (PSC) on AVs.
  • Facilitate vehicle charging schedules to ensure optimized operations.
  • Shuttle vehicles between locations locally as needed to support upkeep and operational needs.
  • Safely operate Autonomous and Non-Autonomous Vehicles on public roads and closed courses.
  • Provide field support by manually recovering autonomous vehicles as needed.
  • Reposition vehicles according to defined layout plans to optimize space and operational flow.
  • Operate in-vehicle data recording computers for minor debugging when issues arise.
  • Provide accurate and useful feedback to the engineering teams on vehicle behavior observed.
  • Utilize various fleet management tools, including G Suite applications and Jira.
  • Administrative tasks such as responding to fleet support requests or updating documentation.
  • Complete accident and incident reports in accordance with company procedures.
  • Adherence to all Motional AD safety and operating policies and procedures.
  • Compliance with local, county and state traffic laws.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications:
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience.
  • Clean driving record for the previous 3 years and no DUIs for the previous 10 years.
  • Must be able to successfully complete in-house driving course/examination.
  • Basic working knowledge of Autonomous Vehicle technology.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to use company communication systems and communicate clearly and effectively.
  • General PC knowledge required; ability to manage files, send emails, and navigate the internet.
  • Basic knowledge of how to navigate smartphones using applications to complete job duties
  • Able to pass a DOT physical
  • Familiarity with G Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Google Drive.
  • High school diploma or equivalency.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):
  • Prior experience as an Operator/Driver for Autonomous Vehicles.
  • Demonstrated experience with working knowledge in a Linux environment
  • Experience with NHTSA Levels 2-5 Autonomous Vehicles preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in ambiguity, balancing operational planning with tactical execution

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and frequently walk for long periods. The employee is occasionally required to crouch, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Working Environment:
This role requires the ability to interface with both office and field environments. While primarily office-based, the Mission Support Specialist will be present at test facilities, requiring the ability to safely operate and ride in autonomous vehicles, oversee vehicle inspections, and engage in field operations as needed. The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors including but not limited to specific skills, experience and expertise, role location, certifications, licenses, and business needs.
