GMDSS operators are responsible for maintaining continuous radio watch, monitoring distress channels, and ensuring all communication equipment is fully operational at all times. Their daily tasks include sending and receiving routine, safety, and emergency messages, keeping accurate communication logs, and performing regular equipment checks and maintenance. They also coordinate with the ship's crew and external authorities such as rescue coordination centers during emergencies. This role is vital in ensuring the vessel's safety, compliance with international regulations, and effective communication at sea.

What is a GMDSS job?

Professionals in this role ensure effective maritime communication for distress calls, emergency coordination, and routine ship-to-shore messaging. They must be certified in GMDSS operations and adhere to international regulations set by the IMO (International Maritime Organization). Duties may include monitoring distress frequencies, troubleshooting equipment issues, and coordinating with coast stations for safe navigation.
