Job description

Job Description

The Role

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager, Cloud Platform - Nova to lead engineers on the Atmos team building GM's next generation cloud platform, Nova. Nova powers customer- and vehicle-centric systems across GM, including areas such as OnStar, GM Energy, and Commercial and Fleet partnerships. This role will focus primarily on event messaging, data, and storage services that support multiple teams and workloads in a multi-cloud environment running on Azure and GCP.

This is a strong opportunity for a leader who wants to work on meaningful platform problems at real scale. The size, complexity, and reach of the platform at GM create the kind of challenge that appeals to engineers who want to build durable shared capabilities, influence how large organizations operate, and help teams move faster through better platform foundations. The systems this team owns sit at the center of a large and complex engineering ecosystem, and the work has direct impact on how critical GM software is built, operated, and supported.

The right candidate will bring strong engineering management experience, technical depth in cloud platform engineering, and a clear track record of helping teams deliver and run highly reliable shared services. This leader will help the team strengthen monitoring, observability, deployment patterns, operational readiness, and on-call execution while also bringing more structure to backlog management, program management, planning, and team ceremonies. The role is especially well suited for a leader who thinks about platform capabilities as products for internal customers and wants to help create the paved roads and shared operating model that make the secure, reliable path the easiest path for engineering teams.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers responsible for cloud platform capabilities in event messaging, data, and storage

  • Drive delivery and day-to-day operational excellence for shared services used across Nova

  • Own backlog management, program management, planning, and team ceremonies to improve execution and clarity across the team

  • Help define and execute the roadmap for platform capabilities that improve reliability, scalability, security, and developer experience

  • Improve monitoring, observability, deployment patterns, release safety, and other operational practices needed to run highly reliable services

  • Establish clear expectations for engineering quality, service ownership, incident response, on-call participation, and operational maturity

  • Partner with engineering, platform, security, and product stakeholders to align priorities and deliver platform capabilities that meet customer needs

  • Build a strong team culture grounded in accountability, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and operational ownership

  • Coach engineers and emerging leaders through regular feedback, career development, and high standards for execution

  • Ensure the team is building reusable, well-operated services that reduce complexity for platform consumers across Azure and GCP

Your Skills & Abilities

  • Significant experience leading engineering teams in cloud platform, infrastructure, distributed systems, or related software engineering environments

  • Strong technical foundation in cloud-native systems, shared platform services, and production operations

  • Experience leading teams responsible for messaging, data, or storage platforms in production environments

  • Experience building and running highly reliable services with strong practices around monitoring, observability, deployment patterns, and service operations

  • Experience with backlog management, program management, planning, and team execution rhythms in a platform or infrastructure-focused organization

  • Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and develop engineers across multiple experience levels

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence across organizational boundaries

  • Ability to connect technical decisions and platform investments to broader engineering and business outcomes

  • Experience improving engineering execution, service ownership, on-call maturity, and operational excellence in growing platform organizations

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge

  • Experience building, managing, or providing shared capabilities around Kafka, RabbitMQ, Postgres, Cassandra, or related systems

  • Experience leading teams that operate multi-cloud platform services across Azure and GCP

  • Strong background in developer enablement and building shared services that are easy for internal customers to adopt

  • Experience improving service reliability, observability, deployment patterns, operational readiness, and supportability for shared platform systems

  • Experience leading teams with meaningful on-call responsibilities and strong incident response practices

  • A practical leadership style with a high bar for quality, accountability, and customer-focused platform delivery
