What are common challenges GM apprentices face during their training period?

GM Apprentices often encounter challenges such as adapting to the fast-paced and varied demands of the role, balancing hands-on operational tasks with learning management skills, and quickly building relationships with both team members and customers. Navigating the transition from learning to taking on more responsibility can be demanding, especially as apprentices are expected to absorb company policies and best practices efficiently. However, these challenges are typically addressed through structured mentorship, regular feedback, and exposure to a wide range of business functions.

What is the difference between Gm Apprentice vs Gm Technician?

Apprentices typically work under supervision, gaining experience, whereas technicians handle repairs with greater autonomy.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a GM apprentice?

To thrive as a GM Apprentice, you need foundational knowledge in business operations, problem-solving abilities, and at least a high school diploma, often with some relevant industry experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and scheduling tools is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a willingness to learn set outstanding candidates apart. These skills and qualities are essential for supporting management, ensuring efficient operations, and preparing for advancement to higher leadership roles.

How much do GM apprentices make?

GM apprentices typically earn between $15 and $20 per hour, depending on location and experience. Apprenticeship programs often include on-the-job training and may offer additional benefits such as certifications and career development opportunities.

What is a GM apprentice?

A GM Apprentice, or General Manager Apprentice, is an entry-level management trainee who learns the skills and knowledge required to eventually become a General Manager within an organization, often in industries like hospitality, retail, or restaurants. They work closely with experienced managers, participate in training programs, and handle various operational tasks to gain hands-on experience. This role is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of business operations, team leadership, customer service, and financial management. Successful completion of the apprenticeship can lead to promotion into management roles.

About JBS Auto Service

JBS Auto Service is an independent automotive repair shop specializing in light-duty diesel pickup truck repair and maintenance. About 80% of our workload is diesel pickups, including Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins trucks.

We are not a medium-duty or heavy-duty diesel shop. We do not work on semis, buses, big rigs, or over-the-road trucks. Our focus is diesel pickup diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.

We are looking for an experienced, certified, or dealership-trained diesel technician who wants steady diesel pickup work, a strong independent shop environment, and no weekends.

This is a great opportunity for a Ford, GM, or Ram diesel technician who is tired of the dealership grind, warranty time, Saturdays, and corporate pressure, but still wants to do high-quality diesel work in a professional shop.

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with one or more of the following platforms:

  • Ford Powerstroke
  • Chevrolet/GMC Duramax
  • Dodge/Ram Cummins

You do not need to be an expert in all three brands, but strong diesel pickup experience is important. Ford, GM, Ram/Stellantis, Cummins, or ASE certifications are strongly preferred.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in accurate diagnostics, quality repairs, good documentation, and working as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair light-duty diesel pickup trucks.
  • Perform diesel engine diagnostics, drivability diagnostics, and no-start diagnostics.
  • Diagnose and repair fuel system issues, turbocharger issues, cooling system problems, emissions system faults, and electrical concerns.
  • Work on Ford Powerstroke, Chevrolet/GMC Duramax, and Dodge/Ram Cummins diesel pickups.
  • Perform routine diesel maintenance, including oil changes, fuel filters, air filters, fluid services, and inspections.
  • Diagnose and repair EGR, DPF, DEF, SCR, NOx, and other diesel emissions-related systems.
  • Use scan tools, diagnostic equipment, service information, and proper testing procedures.
  • Perform digital vehicle inspections accurately and thoroughly.
  • Document findings, test results, recommendations, parts used, and repairs performed.
  • Communicate clearly with service advisors and other technicians.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Follow shop procedures and safety standards.
  • Help support and guide entry-level technicians or apprentices when needed.
Qualifications
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing light-duty diesel pickup trucks.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one diesel platform: Powerstroke, Duramax, or Cummins.
  • Ford, GM, Ram/Stellantis, Cummins, or ASE certifications preferred.
  • ASE A9 Light Vehicle Diesel certification is a plus.
  • Dealership diesel experience is a plus.
  • Strong electrical and drivability diagnostic skills preferred.
  • Experience with diesel fuel systems, turbo systems, cooling systems, and emissions systems.
  • Ability to use scan tools and service information effectively.
  • Ability to document repairs and recommendations clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
  • Team-oriented attitude and willingness to communicate with advisors and technicians.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
This Job May Be a Good Fit If You:
  • Are a Ford, GM, or Ram diesel technician looking for a better shop environment.
  • Want to work on diesel pickups without dealing with medium-duty or heavy-duty trucks.
  • Are tired of warranty time, dealership politics, or weekend schedules.
  • Want steady diesel pickup work in an independent shop.
  • Take pride in diagnosing problems correctly the first time.
  • Enjoy working on Ford Power Stroke, Chevy/GMC Duramax, and Ram Cummins trucks.
  • Want to be part of a shop that is serious about growing its diesel pickup repair team.
  • Are willing to help mentor entry-level technicians as the diesel department grows.
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay: $40–$60 per hour, based on experience, certifications, and diagnostic ability.
  • No weekends.
