The Assistant Vice President, Global Healthcare Product Leader serves as the senior product authority responsible for the strategic leadership, development, governance, maintenance, and ongoing evolution of the Global Healthcare product portfolio. This role provides enterprise-level oversight for healthcare insurance products across multiple Healthcare segments and jurisdictions, ensuring product offerings remain aligned with the underwriting strategy, profitability objectives, regulatory requirements, operational excellence standards, and evolving market conditions.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Summary

The position is accountable for establishing and executing a comprehensive product management framework that governs the full product lifecycle, including product design, form development, endorsement management, manuscript language creation, product enhancements, regulatory implementation, underwriting support, and product modernization initiatives. This role serves as the central point of coordination among Underwriting, Legal, Compliance, Actuarial, Claims, Risk Control, Operations, Technology, Product Architecture, Distribution, and senior business leaders to ensure product consistency, governance, and successful execution of strategic priorities.

In addition, this role is responsible for maintaining a structured product operating model, supporting product lifecycle management, improving product-development processes, and ensuring the Healthcare product portfolio remains responsive to emerging risks, regulatory developments, claims trends, underwriting needs, and market opportunities. This officer-level role requires a strategic and technical product leader who can balance innovation and speed-to-market with strong governance, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness in a complex, matrixed global environment.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule, with time split between a CNA office and remote work from home. While Chicago, IL is the preferred location, we are open to considering exceptional talent across our footprint and encourage candidates from any CNA office location to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines, including but not limited to the following:

  • Leads the strategic development, enhancement, governance, and maintenance of the Global Healthcare product portfolio, including policy forms, endorsements, manuscript language, coverage solutions, underwriting tools, forms libraries, and product guidance materials.

  • Establishes and executes a multi-year product strategy and product-development roadmap that supports business objectives, underwriting strategies, profitability goals, market opportunities, customer needs, emerging risks, and competitive positioning.

  • Serves as the principal product leader for all Global Healthcare lines of business, ensuring product consistency, coverage clarity, operational effectiveness, and alignment with underwriting philosophies and risk appetite.

  • Oversees the development, revision, and implementation of policy forms, endorsements, and manuscript wording, to comply with regulatory amendments, state-specific changes, segment-specific product initiatives, and product maintenance needs across all Global Healthcare segments and applicable jurisdictions.

  • Designs, implements, and oversees a structured product governance framework that supports product intake, prioritization, approval, implementation, documentation, communication, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance activities.

  • Establishes robust governance controls, documentation standards, product inventories, version-control protocols, decision logs, implementation procedures, and audit-ready product records and maintains centralized product repository to include product playbooks, , decision records, competitor comparisons, training materials, implementation documentation, product inventories, and project tracking tools.

  • Partners closely with Global Healthcare Underwriting leadership to translate strategic priorities, portfolio objectives, risk appetite, customer needs, distribution feedback, and marketplace developments into actionable product solutions that support profitable growth and disciplined risk selection.

  • Provides senior product expertise to underwriting teams on coverage interpretation, endorsement availability, form intent, manuscript language, product application, and complex product-related account issues.

  • Collaborates with Legal, Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, Product Architecture, Operations, Technology, Claims, Risk Control, Underwriting, and Actuarial throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure effective implementation and governance.

  • Ensure product development and maintenance processes support regulatory alignment, underwriting policy requirements, compliance standards, audit expectations, documentation protocols, and enterprise governance practices.

  • Monitors emerging Healthcare, legal, regulatory, technological, and insurance-market trends that may require product modification, underwriting guidance, or governance review.

  • Leads product assessments and response strategies related to emerging exposures and evolving Healthcare issues, including but not limited to artificial intelligence, cyber liability, telemedicine, digital health technologies, private equity ownership of healthcare organizations, wearable devices, environmental liability concerns, PFAS-related risks, abuse and molestation exposures, healthcare workforce challenges, and evolving standards of care.

  • Serves as an active member of the Global Healthcare Product Board and related subcommittees, offering information on the identification, prioritization, evaluation, implementation, and monitoring of product initiatives.

  • Supports business planning, portfolio reviews, profitability studies, pricing strategies, growth plans, and underwriting action plans through product expertise and strategic consultation.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve product consistency, reduce ambiguity, strengthen governance controls, improve speed to market, and reduce operational, compliance, and continuity risks.

  • Develops and delivers product training, underwriting guidance, communication materials, and tools to support consistent product understanding and execution across Global Healthcare underwriting teams.

  • Evaluates competitor products, policy language, market innovations, industry best practices, and distribution trends to inform product strategy and identify opportunities for differentiation.

  • Leads, manages, coaches, and develops product-development professionals, with emphasis on accountability, technical excellence, execution discipline, talent development, and succession planning.

  • Communicates effectively with senior leaders, underwriting teams, business partners, and other stakeholders regarding product priorities, product strategy, emerging risks, governance actions, and implementation plans.

  • Performs additional responsibilities and special projects as assigned.

Typically reports to Vice President or higher-level executive.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Extensive technical knowledge of Medical Professional Liability, General Liability, Excess Liability, Umbrella Liability, and related insurance products.

  • Deep understanding of insurance policy construction, endorsements, manuscript drafting, coverage intent and interpretation, underwriting guidelines, product architecture, regulatory compliance, and product governance principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute product strategies that strengthen underwriting discipline, drive profitable growth, improve operational performance, and enhance competitive positioning.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare industry dynamics, litigation trends, regulatory developments, emerging liability exposures, insurance market conditions, and distribution network strategies.

  • Proven experience leading complex product-development initiatives from concept through implementation, including stakeholder alignment, business case development, drafting, stakeholder reviews, approvals, regulatory considerations, implementation planning, and performance monitoring.

  • Proficient analytical, strategic-thinking, and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to connect product decisions to profitability, risk appetite, portfolio performance, customer needs, operational execution, and long-term underwriting results.

  • Strong executive presence with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate highly technical product concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate, and build consensus across a highly matrixed global organizational environment.

  • Advanced Leadership capabilities characterized by sound judgment, integrity, accountability, collaboration, adaptability, and commitment to developing high-performing teams.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, underwriting platforms, workflow-management tools, product-governance systems, and other business technology resources.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, Law, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.

  • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in insurance, underwriting, product development, product management, legal, compliance, claims, or related discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience leading product-development initiatives, policy form drafting, endorsement design, product governance programs, regulatory implementations, underwriting strategy initiatives, or product lifecycle management activities.

  • Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, RPLU, ARM, ASLI, or comparable credentials preferred.

  • Healthcare insurance industry experience highly preferred, including knowledge of Medical Professional Liability and related healthcare casualty products.

In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $152,000 to $242,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
