What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Glass Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Glass Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of glass types and fabrication techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and a willingness to learn through on-the-job training. Familiarity with hand tools, cutting equipment, safety gear, and sometimes CAD design software is commonly expected. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and strong communication skills help you excel in this hands-on, collaborative environment. These skills and qualities ensure safe, precise work and effective teamwork, leading to successful glass installation and repair projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Glass Apprentices during their training period?

Glass Apprentices often encounter challenges such as mastering precise hand skills, safely handling hot materials, and learning to work efficiently under time constraints. The apprenticeship involves both hands-on practice and following detailed instructions from experienced glassworkers, which can be demanding but rewarding. Adapting to the physical demands of the role and developing a keen eye for detail are essential for success. Apprentices are also expected to collaborate closely with their team, learning from feedback and gradually taking on more complex projects as their skills improve.

What is a Glass Apprentice?

A Glass Apprentice is a trainee who works under the guidance of experienced glassworkers to learn the skills needed for working with glass. This includes cutting, shaping, installing, and repairing glass in various settings, such as windows, doors, and decorative panels. Apprenticeship programs typically combine hands-on training with classroom instruction and can last several years. The goal is to prepare apprentices to become skilled glass workers or glaziers, capable of working independently in the trade.

What is the difference between Glass Apprentice vs Glass Installer?

AspectGlass Apprentice

Glass Apprentices typically undergo training programs, learn safety protocols, and assist experienced installers. They often hold basic certifications and work under supervision. Glass Installers are skilled professionals who independently install, repair, and replace glass in windows, doors, and other structures. They usually have more experience and certifications, working directly with clients and on-site. Both roles are essential in the glass industry, with apprentices focusing on learning and support, while installers perform the core installation tasks.

Job description

GET TO KNOW US:
M&M Glass has been southern Louisiana’s trusted custom glass and mirror provider for over 40 years. We’re known for our high-quality work, customer-first service, and solid relationships with families, designers, contractors, and builders across the region. None of it would be possible without our hands-on team who shows up ready to work every day.
LIFE AS A GLAZIER APPRENTICE:
Our Glazier Apprentices are hands-on team members in training, learning the tools, techniques, and workflows needed to install high-quality custom glass products.
In this role, you’ll assist experienced glaziers with the installation of showers, mirrors, tabletops, cabinet glass, and more. You’ll be expected to represent M&M Glass with professionalism on every job site and remain open to learning at every stage.
You’ll help prepare trucks for the day, check materials, and support installation in the field. You may also assist with general shop tasks, cleanup, or other projects as needed. A positive, team-focused attitude is key, along with the ability to follow instructions, communicate respectfully, and work efficiently with others.
This is a physical and fast-paced role. It is also an opportunity to learn a specialized trade from the ground up.
Compensation:
  • Hourly pay is based on knowledge and experience.
  • Range: Starting at $14 to $18 per hour.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:
As a Glazier Apprentice, you’ll support our install teams by helping prep materials, load trucks, and assist with on-site glass installations. You’ll learn the ins and outs of our products, tools, and safety procedures while gaining hands-on experience in both the shop and the field. Your typical day might include:
Installation Support:
  • Assist with installing framed and heavy glass showers, mirrors, cabinet glass, tabletops, and other custom glass products.
  • Help load and unload materials at the shop and job sites.
  • Clean up customer homes and worksites after each install.
  • Safely lift and carry glass (up to 70 lbs) as part of a team.

Shop and Workflow Assistance:
  • Learn to cut, break, and sand glass using proper tools and safety gear.
  • Assist with shop cleanup and organization.
  • Pitch in where needed to keep projects moving on schedule.
Teamwork and Attitude:
  • Follow direction from experienced glaziers and supervisors.
  • Communicate respectfully with coworkers, contractors, and clients.
  • Stay motivated and open to learning new skills every day.

Truck Prep and Maintenance:
  • Check daily routes and load trucks with all required materials.
  • Complete truck checklists, clean interiors daily, and wash exteriors weekly.
  • Report any maintenance needs or equipment issues.

THINK YOU'D BE A FIT?
We’re looking for someone who’s ready to learn, work hard, and grow with us. You don’t need previous experience with glass (we’ll teach you that), but you should bring:
  • Confidence using a tape measure and doing basic math, especially fractions.
  • Physical ability to safely lift and carry glass (up to 70 lbs).
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to take direction.
  • A positive, team-first attitude—even when the job is physically demanding.
  • Respect for safety procedures and a commitment to wearing proper gear.
  • Reliability and professionalism when interacting with coworkers and customers.
  • A desire to build a long-term skill set in a hands-on trade.

BONUS IF YOU HAVE:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 25+ years of age.
  • Prior experience in construction, fabrication, or warehouse environments.
  • Familiarity with tools, vehicles, or delivery routes.
  • Interest in long-term skilled trades or glass installation.

WHAT YOU GET:
We believe in hard work, respect, and a healthy balance between work and life.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Weekly pay.
  • Great hours: Report at 6:30 AM, off most days by 4:00 PM.
  • No clock-out required for lunch.
  • Overtime available occasionally (voluntary on weekends).
  • Exceptional medical, dental, vision, and supplemental insurance option.
