What is a GitHub engineer?

A GitHub Engineer is a software professional who specializes in using GitHub, a popular platform for version control and collaboration, to manage code, streamline development workflows, and support software engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include setting up repositories, managing branches, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and ensuring code quality through pull requests and code reviews. They may also help teams adopt best practices in source control and integrate GitHub with other tools in the development pipeline. This role requires strong knowledge of Git, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and collaborative software development.

How does a GitHub engineer typically collaborate with development teams to streamline code integration and deployment?

GitHub Engineers work closely with development teams to design and optimize continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring efficient code reviews, automated testing, and seamless merging of code. They often set best practices for branching strategies, manage repository permissions, and help troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, code review sessions, and providing technical guidance on using GitHub features effectively. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring strong communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting developers in maintaining code quality and delivery speed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GitHub engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Github Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, version control systems (especially Git), and collaborative coding practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Github workflows, APIs, CI/CD tools, and scripting languages is typically required, along with certifications like GitHub Certified Developer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across diverse development teams. These skills ensure seamless code collaboration, efficient project management, and the delivery of high-quality software in dynamic environments.

Job description

Description:

Arbiter offers a complete suite of SaaS tools that allows athletic directors, assigners, coordinators, and officials to easily manage all aspects of their responsibilities. Our Software Engineers are responsible for software development in a fast-paced agile environment. They are responsible for the architecture, development, and maintenance of our complex, high-performance web applications, APIs, large scale databases, and other technologies. Because this position plays a role in mentoring other developers and QA engineers as well as communicating with other employees throughout the company, excellent communication skills are a must.

AI-First Development

Arbiter is adopting an AI-first approach to engineering. This means AI agentic tools are the default way our engineers work, not just an occasional accelerator for writing code. In practice this looks like:

  • Using AI tools across the full development lifecycle: technical planning, backlog/item refinement, architecture and design, implementation, unit and integration testing, and code review.
  • Refining the context and instructions given to AI tools — clear requirements, constraints, and codebase context — so they produce more accurate, higher-quality results.
  • Remaining fully accountable for anything produced with AI assistance: reviewing and validating AI-generated output for correctness, security, and adherence to team standards with the same rigor as hand-written code.
  • Continuously learning new AI tools and techniques and sharing effective practices with the rest of the team.

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, develop, and test code across our SaaS solution, primarily working in C#, SQL, and React, along with API-based applications.
  • Apply AI agentic development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) across the development lifecycle — technical planning, item refinement, architecture, coding, testing, debugging, and code review — while validating output for quality, security, and adherence to team standards.
  • Document project objectives and measures for success.
  • Understand customer business requirements and application objectives, and raise open questions with developers, QA engineers, and product managers as needed.
  • Design, build, and maintain comprehensive test coverage — unit tests, integration tests, and test plans/cases — across our hardware and software platforms.
  • Review requirements with other developers and QA engineers for completeness and accuracy.
  • Mentor and pair program with junior Developers and QA Engineers on a regular basis.
  • Design software and technology architectures according to industry standard best practices, including effective cache and session management strategies.
  • Participate in team planning, estimation, status, and retrospective meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 2-5 years' professional experience developing web applications, primarily using C#, SQL, and React (or comparable object-oriented, relational database, and front-end technologies).
  • Experience with ASP.NET (MVC or Core), Microsoft Azure, and other modern web frameworks is a plus; comfort using AI tooling to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar languages or frameworks is valued as much as depth in any one stack.
  • Experience using AI agentic development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) is a strong plus, especially across planning, development, and testing; willingness and aptitude to adopt AI-first workflows is expected of all engineers.
  • Significant experience developing REST APIs.
  • Detail-oriented and reliable — equally effective collaborating on a team or working independently with minimal direction.
  • Experience in agile software development best practices (specifically Scrum).
  • Experience conducting Requirements Reviews with engineers and other stakeholders such as project managers and/or product owners.
  • Experience with root cause analysis of defects in a complex Enterprise N-Tiered environment.
  • Cellphone or personal device to receive MFA (multi-factor authentication) texts or calls.
  • Have an internet connection that’s adequate for their job, a minimum of 10Mbps down.
