What is a GitHub engineer?

A GitHub Engineer is a software professional who specializes in using GitHub, a popular platform for version control and collaboration, to manage code, streamline development workflows, and support software engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include setting up repositories, managing branches, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and ensuring code quality through pull requests and code reviews. They may also help teams adopt best practices in source control and integrate GitHub with other tools in the development pipeline. This role requires strong knowledge of Git, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and collaborative software development.

How does a GitHub engineer typically collaborate with development teams to streamline code integration and deployment?

GitHub Engineers work closely with development teams to design and optimize continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring efficient code reviews, automated testing, and seamless merging of code. They often set best practices for branching strategies, manage repository permissions, and help troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, code review sessions, and providing technical guidance on using GitHub features effectively. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring strong communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting developers in maintaining code quality and delivery speed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GitHub engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Github Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, version control systems (especially Git), and collaborative coding practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Github workflows, APIs, CI/CD tools, and scripting languages is typically required, along with certifications like GitHub Certified Developer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across diverse development teams. These skills ensure seamless code collaboration, efficient project management, and the delivery of high-quality software in dynamic environments.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working on platform architecture, developer experience, build systems, and engineering enablement. Rather than focusing on individual product features, you'll build and maintain the shared frameworks, libraries, tooling, and deployment capabilities that power WGU's Angular-based web applications.
You'll work closely with application teams, architects, DevOps engineers, and fellow platform engineers to improve development workflows, establish engineering standards, and ensure our front-end ecosystem remains scalable, maintainable, and efficient.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who wants to deepen their expertise in modern web technologies, platform engineering, CI/CD automation, and large-scale enterprise front-end architecture while supporting a mission-driven organization focused on student success. What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain shared front-end libraries, tooling, and platform services used across multiple engineering teams

  • Build and support enterprise-scale Angular applications and reusable UI components

  • Contribute to the architecture and maintenance of Nx monorepos and shared codebases

  • Improve developer experience through automation, tooling, documentation, and engineering best practices

  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and related DevOps tooling

  • Support deployment and release processes using Octopus Deploy and ArgoCD

  • Establish and promote front-end standards for code quality, testing, accessibility, performance, and maintainability

  • Collaborate with application teams to identify platform needs and reduce development friction

  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards and architecture discussions

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving build systems, deployment pipelines, development tooling, and platform infrastructure

  • Monitor platform health and continuously improve reliability, scalability, and developer productivity

  • Contribute to an Agile engineering culture focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience

  • Strong experience with Angular and TypeScript

  • Experience building and maintaining reusable component libraries, shared services, or front-end frameworks

  • Strong understanding of modern JavaScript/TypeScript development practices

  • Experience with HTML5, CSS3, SCSS, and responsive web design

  • Experience working with Git-based source control systems and collaborative development workflows

  • Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines

  • Familiarity with cloud-native development and deployment practices

  • Understanding of software architecture principles, modular design, and scalable application development

  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and problem-solving skills

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Nx monorepos in large-scale Angular environments

  • Experience building internal developer platforms, tooling, or engineering enablement solutions

  • Experience with GitHub Actions for build, test, and deployment automation

  • Experience with Octopus Deploy, ArgoCD, or similar deployment orchestration tools

  • Familiarity with Azure, AWS, or other cloud platforms

  • Experience designing and maintaining shared component libraries and design system integrations

  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Jest, Cypress, Playwright, or Karma

  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and front-end performance optimization techniques

  • Experience with containerized application deployment and tools such as Docker and Kubernetes

  • Experience supporting multiple engineering teams within a shared platform or enterprise environment

  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and application telemetry solutions

  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments

  • Passion for developer experience, platform reliability, and engineering excellence

Why Join the Web Platform Team?
  • Shape the front-end development experience across the organization

  • Build tools, libraries, and frameworks used by multiple engineering teams

  • Work with modern Angular, TypeScript, Nx, GitHub Actions, and cloud technologies

  • Influence engineering standards, platform architecture, and development practices
