Home Careers Senior Lead Electrical Substation Engineer

Location: Hybrid (Raleigh, NC)

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Lead electrical engineering design across market sectors including transmission (substations, OH/UG transmission systems, generator interconnections, interconnection strategy), power distribution (OH/UG power systems, substations, EV charging networks, microgrid design, etc.), and renewables (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind).
  • Take technical ownership of all aspects of design for high voltage (4kV โ€“ 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substations:
    • Substation and switching station physical design, including airโ€‘insulated substations (AIS), gasโ€‘insulated substations (GIS), Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS).
    • Substation general arrangement drawings, elevations, and sections.
    • Plan drawings such as grounding plans, raceway plans, cable tray plans.
    • Grounding plans, cable trough/conduit plans.
    • Specification for major primary equipment.
    • Oneโ€‘line and threeโ€‘line diagrams.
    • Protective relay and metering diagrams.
    • AC/โ€‹DC schematics.
    • Panel layouts, equipment layouts and sectional views.
    • Connection diagrams.
    • Bill of Materials.
    • Cable schedules.
    • DC power distribution design.
    • Electrical lists โ€“ cable and conduit schedules, load list, equipment list.
    • Calculations โ€“ grounding analysis and design, cable sizing, conduit sizing, transformer sizing, battery sizing, lightning protection, bus bracing.
    • Power system studies (load flow, short circuit, protective coordination, arc flash analysis).
    • Lead projects during construction, startโ€‘up, and commissioning.
    • Review engineering work performed by peers or consultants.
    • Occasional travel to client or project sites.
    • Focus on production of highโ€‘quality work and support continuous improvement efforts.
    • Enjoy working in a fastโ€‘paced environment on multiple projects.
    • Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers and may determine the key clients.
Qualifications
  • A Licensed Professional Engineer is required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • At least 7 years of experience performing substation electrical design and engineering for high voltage substations in the US across market sectors including transmission, power distribution and renewables.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluent in English.
