Description
GIS Intern - Rochester, NY
Launch Rochester-area GIS production supporting Fisher's headquarters market, Finger Lakes infrastructure programs, municipal, transportation, utility, environmental, and civil/site projects across Upstate New York.
Use ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, GPS/mobile collection, and disciplined data standards to turn field and project information into maps, layers, dashboards, and geospatial products that help Fisher teams and clients make better decisions.
What You'll Do
  • Enter, edit, manipulate, convert, migrate, and automate GIS data in support of active project work, internal teams, and client deliverables.
  • Create maps, GIS layers, exhibits, and deliverables using field-collected data, GPS/mobile data, survey information, and inputs from Fisher project teams.
  • Maintain consistent cartographic standards while tailoring maps and geospatial outputs to each project's technical, client, and presentation needs.
  • Help identify and resolve missing, conflicting, or incomplete information through careful review, communication, and quality-control practices.
  • Work across Land Survey + Data Solutions and other Fisher sectors while following established procedures, data standards, naming conventions, and QA/QC expectations.

Requirements
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in process for GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related degree with extensive GIS coursework required or in progress, depending on final hiring requirements.
  • Hands-on familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and/or ArcGIS Enterprise environments preferred.
  • Experience collecting GPS data in the field and using mobile data collection applications such as ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, sound judgment, professional communication, organization, time management, and comfort managing multiple tasks.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, eager-to-learn team member who takes ownership, responds well to feedback, and wants to build a long-term GIS career.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or early-career experience in GIS data management, cartography, geospatial analysis, mobile data collection, asset inventories, or infrastructure mapping.
  • Comfort working with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, plus a willingness to learn Fisher standards, workflows, and project delivery expectations.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors, GIS staff, survey teams, engineers, planners, and project managers to clarify data needs and keep deliverables moving.
  • Interest in municipal, transportation, civil/site, environmental, utility, planning, survey, and community-shaping project work.
  • Professional behaviors aligned with Fisher values: Aspire to Excellence, Teamwork and Respect, Owning our Results, and Empowered Employees.

Why Join Fisher
  • Start or grow your GIS career in a collaborative Land Survey + Data Solutions group where your mapping accuracy, curiosity, and technical discipline matter.
  • Work on meaningful infrastructure, municipal, transportation, civil/site, environmental, planning, survey, and geospatial projects across Upstate New York and Fisher's broader footprint.
  • Learn from experienced GIS, survey, engineering, and project delivery professionals while building practical skills in ArcGIS, data standards, QA/QC, and client-ready deliverables.
  • Join a flexible, team-oriented culture built on mentorship, accessible leadership, continuous improvement, ownership, respect, and professional growth.
  • Contribute to clear, reliable geospatial information that helps clients, communities, and project teams make better decisions.

Physical Demands + Work Environment
  • Primarily office-based computer work with prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on GIS, mapping, and project data tasks.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at a time and, when assigned, travel to project sites or field locations.
  • May need to access and navigate construction sites, job areas, and uneven ground when supporting field or project activities.
  • Field conditions may include office, field, and construction environments with possible exposure to dust, noise, fumes, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.

Compensation
