Job description

Position Summary The Records & GIS Technician organizes and maintains City Engineering reports and as-built drawings. Creates and maintains GIS data using scanned documents and GPS. Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Minimum number of years of directly related experience: 3 years of related experience.

A Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS or directly related discipline may substitute for the total years of experience. Education and/or experience preferences: Associates Degree in Geography, GIS or a directly related discipline and 2 years of related experience. Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: None Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: None Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge: Mapping, construction plans and specifications, mathematics. Knowledge of record keeping practices, retention schedules and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Knowledge of computers and related equipment/other office equipment, and data conversion.

Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Working with Geographic Positioning Systems, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS); Operation of personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheets and other standard office equipment.

Abilities: Read, interpret and work from field notes, surveys, aerial photographs, plans, specifications and similar data; carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees; establish and maintain effective, professional relations with other city employees, engineers, public officials, contractors, and the general public; calculate surface areas, lineal distances, and volumes of measured quantities by performing computerized verifications. Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with GIS and engineering staff on GIS projects, routine assignments and special projects. Interacts with other city departments on projects as required.

External: Works with contractors, engineers, vendors, and other government agencies to secure project data. May interact frequently with the general public. Essential Functions The following functions are typical for this position.

The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Operates a computer using word processing, spreadsheet, and ESRI software to create and maintain GIS data and create maps.

Maintains all records in accordance with City, State and Federal policies, including engineering databases and drawings using appropriate computer software. Acquires needed data using engineering record drawings and aerial photography. Conducts research in the field and office to address concerns and resolve conflicting information and ensure data accuracy.

Collects field data using handheld GPS unit or other equipment. Organizes and maintains hard copy and scanned documents, reports and plans. Processes records requests and GIS data requests.

Maintains service schedules and corrects maintenance problems on department equipment.
