Pay: $15/hr

Summer schedule could be up to full time hours with the option to continue part-time hours during the school year; until the temporary employee hours are met, or while funds are available.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the GIS Manager, the GIS intern will assist with editing, creating and analyzing City GIS data, including both tabular and spatial analysis, and preparing maps and other visual products. The intern will support multiple city departments, gaining broad exposure to enterprise GIS operations in a municipal environment. This position offers structured learning opportunities alongside meaningful project work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create and edit GIS data in both versioned and non-versioned environments; perform QA/QC on spatial datasets and resolve data inconsistencies;
  • Collect field data using GPS/GNSS equipment and ArcGIS Field Maps to inventory and update municipal assets;
  • Build and maintain web maps, dashboards, and public-facing applications using ArcGIS Enterprise, Experience Builder, Survey123, and StoryMaps;
  • Read and interpret plats, legal descriptions, and as-built drawings; perform COGO entry;
  • Provide GIS support and map products to internal departments
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of GIS fundamentals including coordinate systems, projections, and spatial data formats;
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online; familiarity with the Esri web app ecosystem (Experience Builder, Dashboards, Survey123, Field Maps, StoryMaps);
  • Basic Python scripting (ArcPy) and/or ModelBuilder knowledge preferred;
  • Ability to read plats, legal descriptions, and engineering drawings;
  • Strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Internships are available to college students who are currently enrolled in a GIS related program or taking GIS related courses.
  • Currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field; completion of at least one GIS coursework sequence required;
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional office environment.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Exposure to normal office conditions, which may include; air conditioning, heat, moderate noise, and many interruptions throughout the workday.
  • Occasionally work environment will include outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, with areas of dust, odors, etc.;
  • Constantly requires sitting at a desk for long periods of time;

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel is occasionally required. Must hold a valid driver's license.
