What is a GIS designer?

A GIS Designer is responsible for creating, analyzing, and managing geographic data and maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. They design spatial databases, develop digital maps, and use geospatial analysis to support decision-making in fields like urban planning, environmental management, and infrastructure development. Their role often involves working with cartographic principles, spatial data visualization, and GIS technologies to present complex geographical information effectively.

What projects does a GIS designer typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

GIS Designers often work on a variety of projects, such as creating detailed maps for urban planning, designing spatial data models for environmental studies, or developing interactive web GIS applications. They frequently collaborate with urban planners, engineers, surveyors, and data analysts to gather project requirements, integrate diverse datasets, and ensure accuracy in map production. Regular communication and teamwork are key, as GIS Designers need to align their outputs with both technical expectations and the practical needs of stakeholders. This collaborative environment fosters professional growth and allows for contribution to impactful, real-world projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GIS designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GIS Designer, you need strong spatial analysis skills, proficiency in cartography, and a solid understanding of Geographic Information Systems, typically backed by a degree in geography, geoinformatics, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, and AutoCAD, as well as relevant certifications such as Esri Technical Certification, is commonly required. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and the ability to clearly communicate complex spatial information are important soft skills. These abilities are vital as GIS Designers must efficiently produce accurate, visually compelling maps and spatial data solutions that support organizational decision-making.

Is GIS still in demand?

GIS designers are in demand due to the increasing reliance on geographic data for urban planning, environmental management, and infrastructure development. Skills in GIS software like ArcGIS and QGIS, along with data analysis and cartography, are valuable for securing employment in various industries.

Job description

Mid-Level / Senior CAD/GIS Designer – Civil & Coastal Infrastructure

Coastal Protection Engineering LLC (CPE), a multidisciplinary coastal consulting firm with a national presence and growing coastal engineering practice, is seeking an experienced CAD/GIS Designer to join our team. This mid- to senior-level role is suited for a well-rounded professional with demonstrated experience in Civil 3D, GIS, survey data processing, surface modeling, and civil or coastal infrastructure projects. Boca Raton, FL is preferred, but the position may also be based in Jacksonville, FL, Destin, FL, or Wilmington, North Carolina. Location is negotiable for the right candidate.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently with large survey and geospatial datasets, developing and comparing surfaces, calculating volume changes, preparing engineering drawings, and integrating CAD and GIS workflows. Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to architectural drafting, interior design, residential/commercial buildings, or other vertical construction are not a fit for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop and manage AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and models for coastal and civil infrastructure projects.

• Create, edit, and analyze TIN surfaces and digital terrain models using topographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, LiDAR, drone, and other survey datasets.

• Import, process, organize, and manage large XYZ point datasets and other geospatial information.

• Develop existing-condition, design, and post-construction surfaces and perform surface-to-surface comparisons, cut/fill analyses, and volumetric calculations.

• Calculate beach, dredging, excavation, fill, and other volume changes between surveys using Civil 3D surfaces and cross sections.

• Prepare plan views, profiles, cross sections, grading surfaces, alignments, quantities, and construction-ready drawing packages.

• Transform engineering concepts, sketches, markups, calculations, and design criteria into high-quality engineering drawings and construction documents.

• Prepare drawings for beach nourishment, dredging, navigation channels, coastal protection structures, marinas, seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, jetties, piers, bulkheads, and artificial reefs.

• Integrate CAD, GIS, survey, engineering, environmental, and aerial-imagery datasets into coordinated project deliverables.

• Develop GIS maps, spatial analyses, project databases, and publication-quality graphics using Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or similar GIS platforms.

• Perform QA/QC of CAD and GIS deliverables and maintain project CAD standards, coordinate systems, file structures, and data integrity.

• Work directly with engineers, coastal scientists, geologists, surveyors, and project managers throughout project development.

• Depending on experience and interest, participate in field surveys, construction observations, hydrographic/topographic data collection, and coastal monitoring activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Mid-level to senior-level professional experience using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D in support of civil engineering, surveying, infrastructure, coastal, marine, or similar projects.

• Demonstrated experience creating and working with Civil 3D surfaces, including surface comparisons and cut/fill or volumetric calculations.

• Experience processing and managing large survey datasets, including XYZ point data.

• Strong working knowledge of GIS, preferably Esri ArcGIS Pro, and experience integrating CAD and GIS datasets.

• Ability to work with survey coordinate systems, aerial imagery, LiDAR, bathymetric/topographic data, and other geospatial information.

• Demonstrated ability to independently develop professional engineering drawings from engineer or scientist markups and design concepts.

• Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards, plan production, data management, and QA/QC.

• Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to manage multiple project assignments and deadlines in a consulting environment.

• Proficient English communication skills (oral and written) and ability to work legally in the United States for an indefinite period.

• Be able to legally work in the USA for an indefinite period of time.

Relevant technical experience and demonstrated capability are more important than a specific degree or number of years in the industry.

Additional Desired Qualifications

The following additional qualifications are not mandatory but will be viewed favorably:

• AI literacy and familiarity with AI-assisted CAD/GIS, scripting, data-processing, and technical-documentation workflows.

• Field experience with hydrographic/topographic surveys, beach profiles, RTK-GPS/GNSS, drone surveys, coastal monitoring, or construction observation. A candidate combining strong CAD/GIS skills with field experience would be especially valuable.

• Experience with QGIS, Global Mapper, or other GIS/geospatial software.

• Experience with structural detailing of reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, seawalls, bulkheads, piers, and related marine structures.

• Experience with Python, MATLAB, AutoLISP, AI Coding agents or other scripting/automation tools used for CAD/GIS and data-processing workflows.

What We Offer

This is a full-time, exempt salaried position. Salary will be commensurate with experience. CPE offers a competitive benefits package, including:

  • 100% employer-paid health insurance for employees and 50% for dependents.
  • A generous 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Supportive, collaborative environment in a fully sustainable office building located near pristine beaches and A-rated schools close to our office locations.
  • A unique opportunity to learn with our experienced coastal team, develop your technical and professional skills, and grow your career while working on interesting coastal engineering projects.
