Distribution Designer - Electric Utility
Location: King of Prussia, PA or Remote in South Jersey
Travel: Local to South Jersey Area
ExecuPOWER is seeking a Distribution Designer to join our growing Electric Utility Engineering team in King of Prussia, PA or the South Jersey area. This role will support electric utility distribution projects through the development and maintenance of CAD and GIS designs, construction drawings, as-built documentation, and field data.
The ideal candidate has experience with electric utility distribution design, GIS, CAD, MicroStation, or AutoCAD and understands how to translate field conditions, utility standards, and engineering requirements into accurate construction-ready designs.
This is an excellent opportunity for a designer looking to grow their career with a rapidly expanding engineering consulting firm supporting critical electric infrastructure projects.
The Big Picture - Top Skills You Should Possess
  • Experience with electric utility distribution design and drafting
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS and/or CAD-based design
  • Knowledge of general drafting standards, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering, construction, and utility distribution drawings
  • Experience with design software such as MicroStation, PowerDraft, AutoCAD, or ESRI GIS
  • Ability to maintain accurate and consistent CAD/GIS data, including designs, as-builts, symbology, connectivity, and annotation
  • Understanding of electric utility systems and electrical configurations, including distribution, transmission, or substation one-line drawings
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving geometry and algebra for drafting and design activities
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to design quality, safety, and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with engineers, designers, project managers, and field personnel

What You'll Be Doing
  • Prepare and revise electric distribution design, construction, and as-built drawings
  • Develop maps, diagrams, sketches, and other utility system records using CAD and GIS platforms
  • Maintain the quality and integrity of data within ExecuPOWER and client electronic records management systems
  • Perform field surveys and accurately identify distribution equipment, facilities, and existing conditions for incorporation into design drawings
  • Interpret client standards, engineering requirements, and construction specifications and apply them to distribution designs
  • Prepare design packages, material reservations, and supporting documentation under the direction of engineers and project leadership
  • Utilize MicroStation, AutoCAD, GIS, and other design tools to develop accurate utility drawings
  • Review designs for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with client standards
  • Support the development of overhead and underground electric distribution designs
  • Coordinate with engineering, field, project management, and client teams to resolve design questions and project requirements
  • Maintain accurate documentation throughout the project lifecycle, including revisions and as-built information
  • Comply with established quality control, safety, project scope, schedule, and budget requirements
  • Support field activities and client requirements as needed
  • Travel to client or project locations when required

Field & Safety Requirements
Because this position supports electric utility infrastructure, candidates must be comfortable with occasional field-based work and varying work environments.
You must be willing and able to:
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Work around electric utility equipment and active infrastructure
  • Enter areas that may be noisy, dirty, or difficult to access
  • Walk field sites and conduct distribution equipment surveys
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all applicable safety procedures
  • Work extended hours, including occasional weekends or holidays, when project or emergency conditions require
  • Participate in emergency and storm-related support activities as required by client guidelines
  • Differentiate color-coded drawings, plans, maps, and utility system information
  • Maintain a valid driver's license

What You Need to Bring to the Table

  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new engineering and utility software
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous electric distribution engineering or design experience
  • Experience with overhead and underground distribution design
  • Design experience in Joint Use
  • Utility fielding or construction experience
