JOB DETAILS

Shift Length: 8 hours
Purpose of this position: Performs technical skills and aids GI physicians, Registered Nurses, anesthesia personnel and other professionals in the GI lab, Operating Room, and other areas of the hospital as assigned. The GI Technician will perform skills and use critical thinking to assist the GI physician with assisting in procedural interventions. They will set up and take down supplies/equipment in the GI lab, Operating room, and other areas of the hospital. The technician will assist with procedures such as; EGD, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, EUS, and PEG placement. The technician will pre-clean endoscopes and use proper handling of endoscopy scopes. The technician will chart in EHR/ Provation, scheduling cases, coordinating, and communicating information related to GI procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safely escorts or transports patients on foot, cart, or wheelchair to and from procedures in the outpatient GI lab and inpatient setting operating room
  • Ensures safe handling while transferring patients from cart to the operating room table
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are clean and operable
  • Observes patients' physical condition and communicates any changes or pertinent information related to the patients' health to the RN or physician, before, during or after the procedure
  • Verify patient identification, collect information regarding prep and ride prior to procedure
  • Takes and records patient's vital signs, blood sugar, and discontinues IVs per nursing protocol or physician's order
  • Conducts POC testing every morning
  • Performs accurate documentation in EHR and provation. Ability to add staff and procedures into epic and provation
  • Ability to set-up, pre- clean, and handle scopes per policy
  • Keeps the procedure room/travel cart organized, neat and orderly, stocked, and notifies the correct individual when supplies are low
  • Collaborates with physicians, anesthesia staff, and nurses to place patient in optimal position depending on procedure, sedation, and current health status of patient
  • Can demonstrate the ability to safely work with patients who have an advanced airway
  • Ability to assist physicians and medical staffing during procedures that require fluoroscopy
  • Monitor and ensure radiation safety measures are strictly adhered to for patients and all staff in procedure/OR room
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of GI procedures and instrumentation
  • Demonstrates selecting appropriate tools needed for general GI procedures and high acuity procedures and can operate tools that are needed for interventions under the direct supervision of the GI physician
  • Keeps up to date on new procedures and equipment and communicates changes to other staff
  • Ensures patient safety by utilizing equipment properly and follows direction of gastroenterology physician
  • Collects specimens under the direct supervision of the GI physician and follows the HHC process for specimen collection
  • Demonstrates and understands clean and sterile techniques and at which times they should be used
  • Demonstrates ability to set up travel/procedural cart outside of the GI lab independently and follows direction from nurse or physician during procedure process
  • Operates specific GI lab equipment in the way they have been trained to use it
  • Identify and reports instruments are equipment that need maintenance
  • Performs troubleshooting process for scopes and all equipment in the GI lab
  • Gathers equipment for cleaning and sterilization and transports to decontamination room
  • Knowledgeable and performs safe infection control practices, including good hand hygiene, standard precautions, cleaning of equipment, and wears proper PPE
  • Collaborates with team, seeks timely advice. Gives and accepts feedback to ensure safe patient care
  • Performs effective communication and follows directions in high acuity environments
  • Understand patient flow and prioritize care of patient using GI lab status board
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in role dependent on the flow of the lab
  • Assists RNs with duties as delegated
  • Collaborates with healthcare teams effectively to ensure efficient workflow during procedures
  • Pursues professional growth and development
  • Cleans procedural, and pre post op rooms and equipment appropriately
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care
  • Orients and mentors new staff members
  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required to ensure patient safety
  • Administer BLS support techniques using the patient care protocol and accepted standards of patient care

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years previous experience in a patient care setting
  • Previous experience in a high acuity inpatient area or procedural area
  • Current Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in a GI clinic
  • Endoscopy certified preferred offered by the SGNA
  • Previous GI experience preferred
  • Graduate of an accredited: Surgical Tech, Endoscopy tech, or Instrument tech program
  • ACLS
