Job description

Position Purpose

The Registered Nurse-Gastroenterology practices in a clinical role in the GI clinic performing RN triage. They are proactive members of the care team and serve GI patients and families.

Clinic Triage: The RN assists patients via the phone and through EPIC messaging when they have GI symptoms. They utilize GI specific Triage protocols to assess symptoms, determine if follow up care is needed, and offer nursing interventions.

The Registered Nurse-Gastroenterology is focused on patient care, safety, and quality, and aims to achieve a high level of patient satisfaction. They follow all practice standards per the Nevada Board of Nursing and implement the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards of the American Nurses Association. They uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of Renown health and uphold all policies and procedures.

Nature and Scope

1. Functions independently as a Triage RN by answering phone calls and EPIC messages of any patients with clinical concerns/questions/symptom management needs. Utilizes triage protocols to assess symptoms, determine if a patient needs to be seen by a provider in the clinic, educates patients on nursing interventions, notifies providers when assistance is needed.

2. Documents all patient encounters in the medical record.

3. Functions independently in all aspects of the role.

4. Ability to anticipate the needs of the physician, RN, and department.

5. Takes direction from clinic leadership.

6. Has an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of clinic nursing.

7. Trusted to follow all procedures and protocols in the GI clinic 100% of the time.

8. Is an active participant in quality and safety initiatives.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES & JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Consistently demonstrates a high level of professional communication with ALL members of the healthcare team.

2. Maintains current BLS certification.

3. Consistently supports and carries out Renown’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

4. Assists and supports system initiatives.

5. Other duties as assigned. May include, but is not limited to, cross-training to medical assistant role, stocking/maintaining supplies, managing emergency equipment and emergent patient needs, and assisting with minor GI clinic procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively. Bachelor’s degree in nursing, healthcare, or related field preferred.

Experience:

Must possess strong nursing knowledge and have graduated from an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program.

Previous RN experience preferred, especially in gastroenterology or endoscopy settings.

Must be confident, competent, and able to work independently.

Ability to effectively care for patients both in a clinical setting and over the phone.

Strong communication and patient education skills.

Successful completion of all required competencies and training programs within the endoscopy unit

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Registered Nurse license.

Certification(s):

Current BLS certification by AHA standards required at time of hire.

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc
