What do geotechnical engineers do?
A geotechnical engineer is part engineer and part scientist. In this career, you plan a variety of structures for mining operations and civil engineering projects. This is all done while considering the natural geology of the area, including the soil, rock, and water tables. Your duties revolve around analyzing data on the location and conducting research of your own. This research may involve collecting rock or soil samples from a job site to determine a site’s ground stability or field testing for future erosion and settlement. You also use computer software to confirm your fieldwork further and assist in creating suitable foundations for the conditions of each specific site. You may be responsible for drafting proposals and meeting with clients to report on your findings and progress as well.

What are some common challenges faced by geotechnical engineers in project execution?
What is the difference between Geotechnical Engineer vs Civil Engineer?
| Aspect | Geotechnical Engineer | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often required | Degree in Civil Engineering, PE license common |
| Work Environment | Site investigations, soil testing, foundation design | Design of infrastructure, transportation, water systems |
| Industry Usage | Specializes in soil, rock, foundation analysis | Broader scope including structures, transportation, water resources |
While both roles require a background in civil engineering and often similar credentials, Geotechnical Engineers focus specifically on soil and foundation analysis, working closely with construction sites and geotechnical investigations. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, designing various infrastructure projects. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description
Join our team of mining professionals and you'll be at the forefront of this evolving industry while building the mine of the future. You'll also build your own future, with exciting opportunities for development and advancement.
Your Opportunity
At Stantec, our geotechnical engineers play a meaningful role in supporting the responsible development of critical resources while advancing safe, sustainable, and well- governed engineering solutions. We are seeking a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer- in- Training (EIT) to join our U.S. Energy and Resources Geotechnical Team and begin building a strong foundation in geotechnical and mining engineering practice.
In this role, you will support dynamic and technically challenging projects in the U.S. and internationally, with a primary focus on tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, and waste rock management systems. You will gain hands- on experience across the full project lifecycle, from early- stage investigations and design through construction support, operations, closure, and reclamation. Beyond mining, you will also have opportunities to contribute to projects involving water dams, pumped storage, and hydropower facilities, providing exposure to a broad range of geotechnical applications.
You will join a highly collaborative national team of approximately 100 geotechnical and geological professionals, working alongside experienced engineers, subject matter experts, and industry leaders. As an Engineer- in- Training, you will develop practical skills through participation in field investigations, construction oversight, and monitoring programs; perform geotechnical calculations and numerical analyses; and support the preparation of engineering designs and technical deliverables.
This role offers a structured and supportive entry point into the geotechnical profession. You will receive mentorship from senior and intermediate engineers, gain exposure to best- practice project governance and dam safety stewardship, and progressively take on more complex technical tasks as your experience grows. Opportunities to learn from client interactions, internal technical reviews, and multidisciplinary project teams will help prepare you for long- term professional growth.
Stantec is committed to investing in the development of early- career engineers. This position provides a strong foundation for professional licensure, technical specialization, and future leadership opportunities within the organization. We are looking for curious, motivated, and adaptable individuals who enjoy solving complex engineering problems and are eager to learn within a supportive team environment. Domestic and international travel will be required for site- based support and field activities for up to approximately 50% of the year.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and execution of geotechnical field and laboratory programs, including participation in field investigations such as drilling, cone penetration testing (CPT), and geophysical surveys, under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Assist with the development of geotechnical material characterizations for use in design and analysis, incorporating laboratory testing results and field data.
- Perform engineering calculations and numerical analyses using industry- standard software such as GeoStudio and Rocscience to support civil and geotechnical design and characterization of site conditions.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical design deliverables, including engineering reports, technical memoranda, construction specifications, and design drawings.
- Support proposal development activities, including assistance with project scheduling, scope definition, and preliminary cost estimating.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations, both internally to project leadership teams and, as appropriate, in support of client meetings and reviews.
- Promote and adhere to safe work practices, following company, client, and regulatory guidelines when planning and executing work in both office and field environments; participation in MSHA and/or OSHA training will be required.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail, with the ability to clearly document engineering work and technical observations.
- Foundational understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, with exposure to seepage, slope stability, and deformation analyses; familiarity with analysis and modeling tools such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, FLAC, or similar software is preferred.
- Interest or initial experience supporting mine waste and tailings management, water dam engineering, and/or mine closure and reclamation projects is considered an asset.
- Willingness and ability to participate in field assignments at remote project locations, including multi- week rotations as needed; travel of up to approximately 50% of the time is an expectation of this role.
- Enthusiasm for gaining hands- on experience through fieldwork, site investigations, and construction support, with flexibility to work in varied environments and project settings.
- Strong desire to learn and grow within a collaborative team environment, working under the guidance and mentorship of experienced engineers.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks under general supervision, demonstrating initiative, curiosity, and sound professional judgment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or equivalent. Preference given to candidates who have taken and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
- 2-4 years of experience working on civil and/or geotechnical engineering projects, focusing on detailed design, site investigation, and technical communication. Preference given to mine waste/tailings management related experience.
