What are geospatial technologies?

Geospatial technologies refer to a range of modern tools used to geographically map, analyze, and visualize data about the Earth's surface and features. This includes technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), remote sensing, and digital mapping. These tools help professionals in various fields—like urban planning, environmental science, and logistics—make informed decisions based on spatial data. Geospatial technologies are essential for tasks such as tracking changes in the environment, planning infrastructure, and managing natural resources.

What are some typical projects a professional in geospatial technologies might work on, and how does collaboration play a role?

Professionals in Geospatial Technologies often work on projects such as mapping infrastructure, analyzing environmental changes, supporting urban planning, or developing location-based applications. These projects usually require collaboration with urban planners, engineers, environmental scientists, and IT specialists to ensure data accuracy and meaningful analysis. Working in multidisciplinary teams is common, as geospatial experts provide spatial data insights that inform decision-making across various sectors. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for integrating geospatial data into broader project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in geospatial technologies, and why are they important?

To thrive in Geospatial Technologies, you need expertise in spatial analysis, cartography, and geographic information systems (GIS), often supported by a degree in geography, geoinformatics, or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, remote sensing software, and GPS data collection systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help professionals interpret spatial data and collaborate across disciplines. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate geospatial insights that inform decision-making and drive projects in sectors like urban planning, environmental management, and logistics.

What is the difference between Geospatial Technologies vs GIS Technician?

AspectGeospatial TechnologiesGIS Technician
CredentialsOften requires GIS certifications, remote sensing, or GIS-related degreesTypically requires an associate or bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, or related field
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, data analysis, software development, and project managementOffice-based, working with GIS software and data management
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including urban planning, environmental management, and defensePrimarily employed in government agencies, engineering firms, and environmental organizations

Geospatial Technologies encompass a broad range of tools, methods, and applications related to spatial data, including GIS, remote sensing, and GPS. GIS Technicians focus specifically on managing and analyzing GIS data within that broader field. While GIS Technicians are a key part of Geospatial Technologies, the latter covers a wider scope of roles and expertise.

Is GIS a high demand job?

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) professionals are in high demand across industries such as urban planning, environmental management, and transportation due to the increasing reliance on spatial data analysis. Skills in GIS software like ArcGIS and QGIS, along with data management and analysis abilities, enhance job prospects in this field.

What do geospatial technologies do?

Geospatial technologies involve collecting, analyzing, and visualizing geographic data using tools like GIS (Geographic Information Systems), GPS, remote sensing, and mapping software. Professionals in this field use these tools to support urban planning, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and infrastructure development. Skills in data analysis, cartography, and spatial reasoning are essential for roles in this area.

Job description

Prophetic Software is not able to sponsor employment visas now or in the future. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship to be considered for this role.

About Prophetic:

Real estate development is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has run on fragmented data, manual processes, and gut instinct for decades. Prophetic is changing that. We're building the AI-native platform that enables homebuilders, developers, and investors to find, analyze, and act on land opportunities from a single system — powered by proprietary technologies that process billions of data points across all 50 states. We are the market leader in our space, and our customers don't just use the product — they love it. We're not making teams more efficient. We're changing how they operate.

Prophetic is scaling fast — demand is outpacing our ability to hire, and we're just getting started. This is a once-in-a-lifetime team: sharp, low ego, deeply collaborative, and obsessed with building the best product in the industry. Come disrupt an industry with us.

About the Role:

The engineering team is scaling to meet demand that is outpacing our ability to ship. You'll build across our core platform products that homebuilders and developers use to find, analyze, and act on land opportunities across all 50 states. You'll report to our CTO, working alongside a team of senior engineers shipping features every two to three weeks.

You're expected to use AI tooling daily as a standard part of the engineering workflow. We run automated testing across the platform. We have multiple openings across the platform. You'll own features end-to-end, from database to UI, and ship code that supports customers making million-dollar land acquisition decisions.

What You'll Do:
  • Build and ship full-stack features across our core platform using modern backend and frontend frameworks.

  • Design and optimize database schemas for geospatial queries across large datasets.

  • Write production-quality code that deploys through our CI/CD pipeline.

  • Collaborate with product, design, and account management to translate customer needs into shipped features.

  • Use AI tooling as part of your daily development workflow — our engineers approach writing code.

  • AI-first. Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and on-call rotation.

What You Need:
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with Python and TypeScript/React, or similar.

  • Strong experience with relational databases and RESTful API design.

  • Comfort working across the full stack — you can build a backend endpoint and the frontend component that consumes it.

  • Experience shipping features in a production environment with CI/CD pipelines.

  • Comfort with AI development tooling.

  • Strong sense of product ownership. Familiarity with a fast-paced startup environment.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with geospatial data (parcel data, map layers, or simiar).

  • Experience with major cloud platforms. Background in proptech, real estate, or construction technology.

Why Prophetic:
  • The team. Wide expertise, sharp, low ego, and genuinely fun to work with. We have each other's backs and we celebrate wins together.

  • Real ownership and impact from day one. Our customers make million-dollar decisions on our platform. Your work matters immediately.

  • AI-native product and AI-native workflows. Every team — engineering, sales, operations — runs on AI tooling daily.

  • Founder-led transparency. Leadership shares the financials, the strategy, and the hard calls with the whole team.

  • High growth, high demand. The product works, customers love it, and we are hiring to keep up. No shortage of opportunity here.

  • Flexibility. Remote, hybrid, or in-office with a great Portland, OR headquarters.

  • Self-starters who thrive in ambiguity. We're a startup. If you need someone to tell you what to do every morning, this isn't the place; if you come alive solving hard problems with smart people, it is.

Benefits (US-based Full-time):
  • 100% medical, dental & vision insurance coverage for you; 30% coverage for dependentsCompetitive salary and meaningful early-stage equityUnlim

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Hybrid/Remote stipend

  • In-office perks: snacks, drinks, coffee, ping-pong table, and more — plus cuddles from Olive, our in-office Doberman!

  • Budget for intra-office travel

  • 2–3 annual team meetups in person

How We Work:
  • Truth — Say the hard thing. We speak plainly, flag problems early, and share what's actually going on.

  • Precision — Sign your name to it. Our customers make million-dollar decisions on our data. We get the details right.

  • Velocity — Speed compounds. Waiting doesn't. We ship daily and launch features every two to three weeks.

  • Ownership — Own it, then solve it. We own outcomes, not tasks. If something's broken, we fix it.

EEO:

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and applicants, and we make employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran or military status, marital status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state, or local law.
