Geospatial Data Engineer Remote information

What is a Geospatial Data Engineer?

A Geospatial Data Engineer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and manages systems for collecting, storing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial (location-based) data. They work with geographic information systems (GIS), spatial databases, and cloud platforms to process large datasets from sources like satellites, drones, and sensors. In a remote setting, they collaborate with teams online to build and maintain geospatial data pipelines and support decision-making for industries such as urban planning, environmental science, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geospatial Data Engineer in a remote role, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geospatial Data Engineer (Remote), you need a strong background in GIS, geospatial analysis, and computer science, often supported by a related degree and experience with spatial databases. Proficiency with tools like Python, SQL, PostGIS, ArcGIS, and cloud platforms is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as GISP. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are essential for collaborating across distributed teams and delivering results independently. These skills ensure effective management of complex geospatial datasets, seamless integration of spatial data solutions, and success in a remote work environment.

What is the difference between Geospatial Data Engineer Remote vs GIS Analyst?

AspectGeospatial Data Engineer RemoteGIS Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's in GIS, Geography, Computer Science; experience with GIS software and programmingBachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related field; proficiency in GIS tools

Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, government agencies, environmental firmsUrban planning, government, environmental consulting
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for GIS and data engineering roles in remote settings

The main difference between a Geospatial Data Engineer Remote and a GIS Analyst lies in their focus and skill set. Geospatial Data Engineers primarily develop and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure, often requiring programming skills, while GIS Analysts focus on spatial data analysis and map creation. Both roles may work remotely and share similar educational backgrounds, but their daily tasks and technical expertise differ significantly.

What are the typical challenges faced by remote Geospatial Data Engineers when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Geospatial Data Engineers often navigate challenges such as coordinating across different time zones, ensuring data consistency, and maintaining effective communication with team members who may have varying technical backgrounds. Utilizing collaborative tools like version control systems and cloud-based platforms helps streamline workflows, but clear documentation and regular check-ins are essential to prevent misunderstandings. Building strong relationships virtually and proactively addressing technical or logistical issues can greatly enhance productivity and teamwork in a remote setting.

As a Sr Data Engineer on the Optum Serve team, you will be accountable for the entire data engineering lifecycle-including research, proof of concepts, architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. You will design, develop, and implement cross-domain, scalable, and secure data solutions that support critical health services for our federal, military, and state partners. This is an exciting remote opportunity to drive technical transformations, adopt modern cloud infrastructures, and deliver high-performance data systems that improve health service outcomes.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Take accountability for the entire data engineering lifecycle, including research, proof of concepts, architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
  • Design, develop, implement, and run cross-domain, modular, flexible, scalable, secure, reliable, and high-quality data solutions that transform data for meaningful analyses and analytics while ensuring operability
  • Design, develop, implement, and run data solutions that improve data efficiency, reliability, and quality, ensuring they are performant by design
  • Layer in instrumentation in the development process so that data pipelines can be monitored, using measurements to detect internal problems before they result in user-visible outages or data quality issues
  • Build processes and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot, maintain, and optimize solutions, and rapidly respond to customer and production issues
  • Embrace continuous learning of engineering practices to ensure industry-best practices and technology adoption, including DevOps, Cloud, and Agile methodologies
  • Drive technical debt reduction and technical transformations, including open source adoption, cloud adoption, and HCP assessment and adoption
  • Contribute to enterprise inner-source and industry communities, striving to reuse and share components wherever possible across the organization
  • Maintain high-quality documentation of data definitions, transformations, and processes to ensure robust data governance and security

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8 years of overall experience in software engineering and data engineering roles, with significant experience designing and delivering large-scale data platforms in enterprise environments
  • 5 years of experience with SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL database administration
  • 3 years of experience with database performance tuning and/or pipelines
  • 3 years of experience with database and/or enterprise monitoring software
  • 1 years of experience with Public Cloud Engineering (Azure preferred)
  • Solid hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms (Azure and/or GCP), including data storage, processing, orchestration, and monitoring services
  • United States Citizenship

  • If you are offered this position, you will be required to provide extensive personal information to obtain and maintain a suitability or determination of eligibility for a Confidential/Secret or Top Secret security clearance as a condition of your employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related technical field, OR equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working within the healthcare industry or supporting government/military health programs (Optum Serve)
  • Experience contributing to internal or external open-source engineering communities
  • Excellent technical writing skills with experience documenting complex data definitions and governance standards
  • Proven track record of successful cloud migration (specifically to Azure or GCP)
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development thinking
