What are the typical daily responsibilities of a geomorphologist?

A geomorphologist usually splits their time between fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and office-based tasks. Daily responsibilities often include collecting soil and sediment samples, conducting topographic surveys, analyzing erosion or deposition patterns, and using GIS or modeling tools to interpret landform changes. Many roles also require preparing reports, making presentations to stakeholders or clients, and collaborating with environmental scientists, engineers, and public agencies on land management or restoration projects. This variety allows for a dynamic work environment, blending hands-on investigation with analytical problem-solving and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Geomorphology position, and why are they important?

To thrive in geomorphology, a solid background in earth sciences, geology, and physical geography is typically required, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), remote sensing software, and environmental modeling tools is highly valuable, along with experience in fieldwork and data analysis. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective written and verbal communication set outstanding geomorphologists apart. These skills are crucial for accurately researching, interpreting, and communicating landform processes that impact environmental planning and management.

What is a Geomorphology job?

A geomorphology job involves studying the Earth's surface features, landforms, and the processes that shape them over time. Job description

Principal Consultant, Natural Resources
Environmental Consulting | Oregon (Hybrid/Flexible)
Compensation: $161,000 - $191,000 depending on experience
This is the kind of role that does not come around often. Our client is an established environmental consulting firm with a national footprint, and they are growing their Oregon presence in a meaningful way. They are looking for a Principal Consultant to help build and lead a natural resources program from the ground up in the state. That means you get real ownership, real influence, and a genuine opportunity to shape something.
If you are a seasoned environmental professional who thrives in a seller-doer model, loves developing client relationships, and gets energized by building teams and programs rather than just managing them, keep reading.
What You Will Be Doing
You will serve as both a business builder and a technical leader, which means your days will be varied and your impact will be visible. On any given week you might be:
  • Developing and nurturing client relationships across real estate, renewable energy, transportation, government, and resource extraction sectors
  • Leading or overseeing project work spanning wetland and stream assessments, Clean Water Act permitting, NEPA review, fisheries studies, fluvial geomorphology, and ecological restoration
  • Driving business development by identifying opportunities, crafting proposals, and closing work
  • Building the Oregon team by hiring, mentoring, and developing staff as the program grows
  • Collaborating with colleagues across other offices and disciplines including cultural resources, GIS, water resources, and engineering to deliver integrated solutions
  • Establishing a growth and hiring plan aligned with market demand
  • Fostering a culture where people want to show up and do their best work

What You Bring to the Table
  • 12 or more years of experience in natural resources or environmental consulting
  • A track record of building or expanding a consulting program or market, not just participating in one
  • Strong working knowledge of Oregon and federal wetland and aquatic resource regulations
  • Established relationships with clients and regulatory agencies in Oregon
  • Experience leading people and developing teams, whether formally or informally
  • A self-starter mindset and comfort with the seller-doer model
  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science, ecology, biology, or a related field (master's preferred)
  • Exposure to NEPA, FERC, or cultural resources work is a plus

What Is in It for You
Our client has built an environment where strong performers are genuinely supported and recognized. Here is what that looks like:
  • Compensation of $161,000 to $191,000 based on your experience and background
  • Comprehensive benefits including healthcare, 401k matching, PTO, and 9 paid holidays
  • Flexible work schedules with hybrid and remote possibilities
  • Two-way mentorship, financial incentives to publish your work, and tuition reimbursement
  • A career path structure designed to help you keep growing
  • Access to multidisciplinary projects and collaboration with recognized industry leaders
  • A collaborative, inclusive culture where your voice matters and your contributions are seen

The Bottom Line
This is a rare chance to step into a leadership role with real runway. You will not be inheriting someone else's program or waiting for permission to make an impact. You will be building something, with the backing of a well-resourced national firm that is serious about growing in the Pacific Northwest.
If this sounds like the opportunity you have been waiting for, we would love to connect.
