Geomatics Assistant information

What is a geomatics assistant?

Geomatics Assistants are professionals who support geomatics engineers and surveyors in collecting, analyzing, and managing geographic and spatial data. They assist with field surveys, operate specialized equipment such as GPS and GIS software, and help process data for mapping and land development projects. Their work is essential in industries like construction, environmental management, and urban planning, where precise mapping and data analysis are required.

What are the typical daily tasks and team interactions for a geomatics assistant?

As a Geomatics Assistant, your daily responsibilities often include collecting spatial data in the field, processing geospatial information using specialized software, and assisting in the creation of maps and reports. You’ll work closely with surveyors, GIS analysts, and engineers, supporting projects such as land development, construction, or environmental monitoring. Collaboration is key in this role, as you’ll frequently communicate findings, help verify data accuracy, and contribute to team meetings to ensure project objectives are met efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geomatics assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geomatics Assistant, you need a solid understanding of surveying principles, GIS concepts, and spatial data collection, often supported by a diploma or degree in geomatics or a related field. Familiarity with GPS equipment, total stations, GIS software, and data processing tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in fieldwork and data analysis. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate data collection, efficient project execution, and collaboration with technical teams.

What is the difference between Geomatics Assistant vs GIS Technician?

AspectGeomatics AssistantGIS Technician
Required CredentialsDiploma or certificate in geomatics, surveying, or related fieldDiploma or degree in GIS, geography, or related field
Work EnvironmentSurvey sites, fieldwork, officeOffice-based, GIS software environments
Employer & Industry UsageSurveying firms, engineering companies, government agenciesUrban planning, environmental agencies, utilities
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for entry-level roles in geomatics and surveyingCompared for GIS data management and spatial analysis roles

The Geomatics Assistant and GIS Technician roles share similarities in required education and work environments but differ mainly in focus. Geomatics Assistants typically support surveying and field data collection, while GIS Technicians focus on spatial data analysis and mapping in office settings. Both roles are essential in geospatial industries, with overlapping skills but distinct daily tasks.

Is a geomatics assistant a good career?

A geomatics assistant supports surveying, mapping, and spatial data collection using tools like GPS and GIS software. It can be a good entry-level position with opportunities for skill development and advancement in fields such as surveying, engineering, and environmental management.

Is geoinformatics a good career?

Geoinformatics is a growing field that involves using geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial analysis, which are valuable skills for a Geomatics Assistant. Job description

Overview

Are you an experienced construction modeler with expertise in Trimble Business Center (TBC) and heavy civil construction workflows that include machine control? As a Geomatics Modeler, you will develop, maintain, and support construction models used for machine control, survey layout, grade verification, quantity tracking, and project execution. Working alongside project teams, survey personnel, and engineers, you will help transform engineering deliverables into constructible, field-ready models that support projects from initial mobilization through completion.

What you will be doing
  • Analyze plans, specifications, addenda, shop drawings, RFIs, and engineering design files to develop construction-ready models for heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Develop and maintain models in Trimble Business Center, including corridors, finish surfaces, subgrades, utility models, site models, piling models, and borehole-derived undercut models.
  • Collaborate with survey teams, project engineers, and construction personnel to resolve design conflicts, constructability issues, and field-driven revisions.
  • Perform quantity calculations, grade verification, earthwork analysis, and reporting to support project planning and execution.
  • Prepare, organize, publish, and maintain construction deliverables through Trimble Connect and Trimble Works Manager.
  • Support models throughout the project lifecycle, including design revisions, RFI responses, as-built updates, and construction-driven changes.
  • Analyze land readings, contract specifications and industry regulations to model project layouts for one or more project sites in a division.
  • Conduct topographic and cross-section surveys to support planning, design, materials and cost projections for the project management team.
  • Assist in the evaluation of potential dimensions and other field problems.
  • Assist with conducting quantity calculations as required.
What we are looking for
  • Advanced Trimble Business Center (TBC) experience.
  • High School Diploma / GED required. Technical degree, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, engineering technology, construction management, or related field preferred.
  • Construction technology, surveying, engineering technology, geomatics, or related education preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, machine control, construction modeling, surveying, or related geomatics disciplines with demonstrated experience developing construction-ready models.
  • LSIT certification is beneficial but not required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Advanced experience with Trimble Business Center (TBC), including the development and maintenance of construction models for machine control, survey layout, grade verification, and construction operations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with project engineers, survey managers, superintendents, project management teams, and construction personnel.
  • Experience working with engineering design data from Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads, MicroStation, or similar platforms. Ability to extract, interpret, validate, and convert design information into constructible field-ready models.

 Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Trimble Business Center (TBC)
  • Experience with Rockpile Solutions (preferred, not required)
  • Experience with Trimble Connect
  • Experience with Trimble Works Manager
  • Experience supporting machine control systems
  • Survey field experience
  • Heavy highway, bridge, airport, rail, utility, or large civil infrastructure project experience
