What does a geology manager do?

A Geology Manager oversees geological activities within an organization, such as mineral exploration, resource evaluation, and environmental assessments. They lead a team of geologists and technicians, manage project budgets, ensure compliance with regulations, and interpret geological data to guide business decisions. Geology Managers play a key role in planning and executing field studies, analyzing geological samples, and communicating findings to stakeholders. Their work is essential in industries like mining, oil and gas, and environmental consulting.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a geology manager?

To thrive as a Geology Manager, you need advanced geological knowledge, experience in mineral exploration or resource assessment, and typically a degree in geology or earth sciences. Familiarity with geological modeling software (such as Leapfrog or Surpac), GIS systems, and industry-standard reporting codes is crucial. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills set outstanding candidates apart by enabling effective team coordination and clear reporting to stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate resource evaluation, regulatory compliance, and successful project management in complex geological environments.

How does a geology manager collaborate with other departments during exploration projects?

A Geology Manager frequently works alongside teams from engineering, environmental, and operations departments to ensure that exploration projects are scientifically sound, cost-effective, and compliant with regulations. They coordinate with engineers to analyze drilling data, share findings with environmental specialists to assess potential impacts, and communicate progress and challenges to project managers. This collaborative approach helps streamline decision-making and ensures that geological insights directly inform broader project objectives.

Job description

Description

Fervo is working to build the most cost-effective, repeatable geothermal power plants in the world. Delivering on this mission requires deep subsurface understanding, disciplined execution in the field, and continuous learning across the full project lifecycle. Joining Fervo's Subsurface organization means operating at the intersection of geology, engineering, and real-world execution where data-driven decisions directly shape development outcomes.

We are seeking a Geologist who is excited by Fervo's mission and motivated to support the design, planning, and execution of large-scale geothermal developments. This role is ideal for a geologist with operational experience, strong technical fundamentals, and a desire to grow into increasing technical and execution responsibility within a highly collaborative environment.

The Geologist supports wellfield design, planning, and execution activities across Fervo's geothermal development portfolio. This role contributes to subsurface characterization, geologic modeling, and operational decision-making during drilling, completion, and testing activities.

Working closely with senior geologists, reservoir engineers, geophysicists, and drilling and completions teams, the Geologist integrates geological, geochemical, and geophysical data to build and maintain conceptual and three-dimensional geologic models. Success in this role requires curiosity, strong communication skills, comfort working in data-rich and execution-heavy environments, and a willingness to engage directly with field operations.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Well Planning, Drilling & Operations Support

  • Support planning and execution of geothermal drilling and completion campaigns, including providing real-time geological input during active operations
  • Develop and QC development plans, well paths, and geologic prognoses for assets under development
  • Plan and supervise mudlogging, logging, sampling, and general wellsite geology activities
  • Support preparation and execution of short- and long-term flow tests for resource confirmation and early production testing

Geologic Modeling & Subsurface Characterization

  • Integrate geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets to support development and maintenance of conceptual and 3D geologic models
  • Assist in development of petrophysical and geomechanical models to characterize reservoirs, fracture systems, and subsurface stress conditions
  • Perform offset well analysis to support geologic prognoses, well planning, and risk assessment
  • Support interpretation of logs, cores, cuttings, and seismic data to refine subsurface understanding

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with reservoir engineering, geophysics, drilling, completions, production, and land teams to support wellfield planning and development
  • Contribute to Statements of Requirements, Basis of Design documents, and After-Action Reviews
  • Prepare clear technical summaries and presentations for internal stakeholders and cross-functional reviews
  • Support asset management activities, resource assessment, and technical input to project evaluations

Data, Vendors & Continuous Learning

  • Support management of subsurface data acquisition vendors and service providers related to logging, sampling, and testing
  • Assist with data quality control, integration, and archiving across subsurface datasets
  • Capture operational learnings from drilling and testing activities and apply them to improve workflows and geologic interpretations
  • Travel periodically to field sites (primarily western U.S.); travel may increase during active drilling campaigns (up to ~20-30%)

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, geophysics, or a related discipline
  • 3+ years of professional experience in geothermal and/or oil & gas subsurface roles
  • Working knowledge of geologic interpretation and subsurface data integration using industry-standard software (Petrel experience strongly preferred)
  • Experience supporting drilling, completions, or wellsite operations in a development or production context
  • Ability to interpret basic subsurface data sets, including well logs seismic data
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly to cross-functional teams
  • Willingness and ability to travel to field locations as required during drilling and testing operations

Preferred

  • Master's degree in geology, geophysics, or a related discipline
  • Operations geology experience during active drilling campaigns
  • Experience with petrophysical log interpretation and image log analysis
  • Exposure to geomechanics, fracture characterization, or subsurface stress analysis
  • Background in structural geology or geothermal reservoir characterization
  • Experience working on horizontal wells or multi-well development projects
  • Familiarity with geologic resource assessment, reserve estimation, or project economics support
  • Experience with geochemical data (e.g., produced water or groundwater analysis)
  • Interest or experience in data analytics, geostatistics, or uncertainty analysis

Location

Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX, with growing offices in Golden, CO, Reno, NV, and Oakland, CA, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at the Golden or Houston office will be required.

Compensation & Benefits

Fervo provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability, flexible paid time off, and paid parental leave. Additionally, Fervo offers an incentive stock options program, a bonus incentive program, and a 401(k) plan with an employer match.

Fervo Energy is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location. Expected Salary: $140,000 - $180,000 based on location and experience.

Fervo Energy reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's sex or other status protected by local, state, or federal law.
