Geological Assistant information

What is a geological assistant?

Geological Assistants are professionals who support geologists and other earth scientists in conducting fieldwork, collecting samples, preparing reports, and analyzing geological data. They often help map sites, maintain equipment, and record observations during geological surveys. Their work is essential in mineral exploration, environmental assessments, and research projects, providing critical data and logistical support to geoscience teams.

How does a geological assistant typically collaborate with geologists and field teams during exploration projects?

Geological Assistants play a crucial support role by collecting and preparing samples, maintaining detailed field notes, and assisting with the operation and calibration of geological equipment. They work closely with geologists, often accompanying them on field trips to ensure accurate data collection and to help set up and dismantle field camps. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Geological Assistants must relay findings, follow detailed instructions, and adapt to changing project needs. This collaboration helps ensure that exploration projects run efficiently and that data is accurate and reliable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geological assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geological Assistant, you need foundational knowledge in geology or earth sciences, typically supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with geological mapping software, GPS devices, and sample collection tools is essential for accurate fieldwork and data analysis. Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies enable accurate data gathering and support critical decision-making in geoscience projects.

The Resource Geologist will assist with Mine Grade Control modelling to ensure the information from the Resource is carried over into the Grade Control.

Key Responsibilities:

Modelling:

  • Conduct resource modelling and estimation of new projects under evaluation, as well as existing operations;
  • Maintain a strong focus on model reconciliation with an ability to investigate the causes of changes to models and being able to demonstrate the impact on the resulting model;
  • Maintain a strong involvement with the QA/QA function in order to ensure the quality of data supporting the resource models
  • Collecting data from historical records and assay results in Excel and Access
  • Converting data to acceptable formats for digitizing with resource modeling programs such as CAD and Surpac.
  • Review historical data for accurate and consistent information or errors found.ย
  • Organize data to be clear and easy to follow and find information needed.
  • Performing technical and geological evaluations on historic and current drill hole data.ย
  • Digitizing wireframes for ore grades using assay results.ย
  • Digitizing faults and geological formations.
  • Conduct statistical analysis on assay results to determine accurate measurements of the ore zone grades.ย
  • Digitize block models with ore values limited by statistical analysis, geological features, and wire frames.ย
  • Create and review reports of volumes and percentages of ore.ย
  • Report to management estimates and advise management.ย
  • Recommend updates or changes to the resource modelling processes to improve quality and efficiency and ensure any modifications are consistently implemented and documented;
  • Assist, support and train relevant Technical Services personnel in resource estimation practices;
  • Using Micromine and Surpac to create geological models
  • Develop Surface, ore domains, ore solids and structure or faulting solids for modelย
  • Run Variogram and Statistical analysis based on QAQC model requirement
  • Consult with consultant on block modelling

Operational Support:

  • Assist mine operations with grade control block model creation.
  • Assist with wireframing and face mapping to ensure the detail of the geological information can be represented digitally.
  • Train new employees on the Surpac process through a series of classes via google meets or in person.ย
  • Conduct tests of the new employees and be available to assist employees.ย
  • Train employees to proper process to determine accuracy in the data prior to digitizing.ย
