Job Description Summary:
ACC is seeking an innovative, student-centered, and industry-experienced professional to join our team as a Full-Time GIS Faculty member. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Faculty supports learning on campus, online, and a combination of the two (known as Hybrid Flexible). Faculty teach introductory through advanced GIS courses. GIS Faculty are responsible for preparing and delivering coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to student success and creating an environment that promotes belonging for all. A successful candidate will possess immense patience for beginners, an infectious enthusiasm for GIS, and the entrepreneurial drive to grow our program into a regional workforce powerhouse. This position is primarily in person and will begin in January 2027.
Job Description:
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program at Austin Community College prepares students for successful careers as geospatial professionals, mapmakers, and spatial data analysts by providing high-quality education aligned with rapidly evolving industry demands. The program emphasizes critical thinking, data visualization, and the development of essential technical skills needed to function effectively across the public and private sectors. Through a comprehensive, stackable curriculum that includes an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, Level 1 and Level 2 Certificates, online asynchronous instruction, hands-on software labs, and real-world project portfolios, students gain practical preparation in remote sensing, workflow management, automation, scripting, and applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence in mapping. Graduates are well-prepared to secure in-demand positions in the regional tech workforce, earn advanced industry credentials, or transfer to a four-year university with confidence.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepare and teach courses in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to a multicultural student population based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline.
- Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.
- Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
- Serve as a mentor to students in the GIS program.
- Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner that does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
- Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
- Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
- Serve on collegewide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice chancellor, vice chancellor, executive vice chancellor.
Additional Duties
- Support program recruitment efforts, including high school outreach, community career fairs, and marketing the program to boost enrollment.
Technology
- Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom.
- Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.)
- Demonstrated proficiency using Esri desktop and cloud GIS, mobile data collection apps (Field Maps, Survey123), web mapping applications (Dashboards, Experience Builder), and relevant technologies.
Principal Professional Standards
- Appropriate use of the college's learning management system (training is provided by the college).
- Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
- Participate in graduation, general assembly, and other official college functions.
- Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
- Attend and participate in collegewide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.
- Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
- Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree in a geospatial or earth science field and three years of non-teaching GIS work experience; OR
- Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in geography or geospatial coursework.
Preferred Certifications:
- GIS Professional (GISP) certification or Esri Technical Certifications.
In accordance with Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements. SACSCOC requirements may differ depending on the courses taught within the discipline.
Required Work Experience
- Three years of non-teaching, industry-related work experience within the GIS industry.
