How to become a genome mapping analyst?
What is the difference between Genome Mapping vs Genetic Technician?
| Aspect | Genome Mapping | Genetic Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Advanced degrees in genetics or genomics, specialized training | Associate's or Bachelor's degree in biology or genetics |
| Work Environment | Research labs, biotech companies, academic institutions | Laboratories, hospitals, research facilities |
| Industry Usage | Genomics research, personalized medicine, biotech development | Sample processing, data collection, assisting in genetic testing |
Genome Mapping involves advanced research and analysis of entire genomes, often requiring specialized degrees and working in research-focused environments. Genetic Technicians support genetic testing and data collection, typically with less formal education, working in clinical or lab settings. Both roles are essential in genetics but differ in scope, credentials, and work environment.

The primary responsibility will include analysis and interpretation of results, preparation and reviewing of final test reports, and reporting of karyotyping, FISH, microarray, and OGM analysis in oncological, prenatal, and postnatal specimens.ย
The Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor Laboratory Director will assist the Medical Director in the overall direction, supervision, and administration of the operations related to specimen handling, testing, and reporting in an accurate, proficient, and expedient manner while ensuring client and patient confidentiality. Working in an academic laboratory with state-of-the-art testing technologies, the Candidate will be expected to develop and validate in-house assays for applications in oncology and other areas of clinical relevance. Other responsibilities include helping in the maintenance of standard operating procedure manuals, and quality control practices, and directing cytogenetics technical staff in the performance of proficiency testing programs as required by the regulatory and licensing agencies (CLIA, CAP).ย
The Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor Laboratory Director will closely interact with the Division of Molecular & Genomic Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and will participate in the education of Pathology and OB/GYN residents/fellows, as well as training of LGG fellows through the ACGME-accredited program. Innovation is an important part of our activities, and we expect that the Candidate will participate in publishing, collaborating, and developing new tests. Departmental and institutional support is available for teaching and research activities.
Qualifications: MD/DO and/or PhD candidates in Biology that are ABMGG-Certified or Eligible for Certification in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) or Cytogenetics are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to candidates with experience in cytogenetic testing of oncology specimens, and to candidates with experience in development of new molecular and cytogenetic tests such as Optical Genome Mapping.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The individual will be a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as a participant in the UPMC/UPP faculty practice plan.
