| Aspect | Genome Mapping | Genetic Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Advanced degrees in genetics or genomics, specialized training | Associate's or Bachelor's degree in biology or genetics |
| Work Environment | Research labs, biotech companies, academic institutions | Laboratories, hospitals, research facilities |
| Industry Usage | Genomics research, personalized medicine, biotech development | Sample processing, data collection, assisting in genetic testing |
Genome Mapping involves advanced research and analysis of entire genomes, often requiring specialized degrees and working in research-focused environments. Genetic Technicians support genetic testing and data collection, typically with less formal education, working in clinical or lab settings. Both roles are essential in genetics but differ in scope, credentials, and work environment.

Job Description:The Ling Xu laboratory at The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position focused on pathogenetic RNA structural biology using stateoftheart cryoEM and related technologies.
The Ling Xu Lab investigates the structure, dynamics, and regulatory mechanisms of RNA and RNA-protein complexes that maintain genome integrity, mediate innate immunity, and impact human health. Using a combination of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biochemistry, and computational biology, the lab visualizes how RNA molecules fold, assemble with proteins, and perform complex cellular functions. By mapping these interactions at high resolution, the research aims to uncover fundamental principles linking RNA structure to biological activity.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Designing and conducting independent research projects aligned with the lab's scientific goals.
- Planning, performing, and troubleshooting experiments, depending on project needs.
- Analyzing experimental data, maintaining accurate research records, and presenting results clearly in lab meetings and other scientific settings.
- Contributing to manuscript preparation, figure generation, and publication of research findings.
- Assisting with grant-related preliminary studies and other research development activities.
- Mentoring graduate students, undergraduate students, and other trainees in experimental design and laboratory techniques.
- Keeping up to date with relevant literature and contributing intellectually to the development of new research directions.
- Collaborating effectively with lab members and external collaborators.

About University of Florida
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
