Youth Crisis Stabilization (YCSU)
Overview of Position:
The Behavioral Health Tutor in the Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit (YCSU) plays a critical role in supporting the educational needs of youth (typically ages 10-17) experiencing acute behavioral health crises. The tutor works in a trauma-informed, therapeutic environment alongside mental health professionals to deliver individualized or small-group academic instruction, promote continuity of education, and support students' return to their home schools or programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Provide academic instruction tailored to the individual needs and grade levels of youth clients in the unit.
2. Collaborate with school districts, parents/guardians, and treatment teams to obtain and maintain educational records, IEPs/504s, and individualized learning plans.
3. Develop short-term educational plans to support cognitive engagement during the stabilization period.
4. Create a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment sensitive to trauma and behavioral health needs.
5. Adapt lessons and materials to meet the emotional and cognitive needs of youth in crisis.
6. Monitor and document academic progress, engagement, and behavioral responses during educational sessions.
7. Communicate with youth in a respectful, age-appropriate, and non-judgmental manner.
8. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to discharge planning related to educational reintegration.
9. Support youth in developing self-regulation, coping, and executive functioning skills through educational interactions.
10. Ensure compliance with educational and confidentiality policies (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree in education, Special Education, or a related field.
2. Valid Ohio teaching credential/certification.
3. Mandatory participation in renewal and professional development activities, including continuing education requirements
4. Experience working with children or adolescents in educational or therapeutic settings.
5. Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and special education accommodations.
6. Ability to manage challenging behaviors in a calm and supportive manner.
7. Completion of trauma-informed care training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
8. Completion of crisis intervention training within six (6) months of hire and participation in de-escalation efforts.

• Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of Infectious Disease precautions and use of proper protective equipment
• Demonstrates Slips/Trips and Falls Awareness.
• Actively contributes to maintaining a safe, clean and quiet environment.
