Cable Crane Operator
SMS Shipbreaking - Brownsville, Texas
Summary
SMS Shipbreaking a leading scrap metal recycler in Brownsville, Texas, is seeking a skilled and experienced Cable Crane Operator to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of cable cranes to lift and move various scrap commodities while ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the company's environmental, health, and safety standards. This role requires a high level of precision and safety awareness.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Operate cable cranes to lift, move, and position materials and equipment as required.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Communicate effectively with ground crew and other team members to coordinate lifting and moving activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of crane operations, including load weights, distances moved, and any incidents or issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any operational issues with the crane.
  • Adhere to project schedules and deadlines while maintaining high standards of work quality.
  • Operate various forklifts and heavy machinery and assist in day-to-day manual labor tasks and activities when machinery does not need to be operated.
  • Cross-train in other positions and assist other employees as needed.
  • Potential to perform general labor duties which may/may not include sweeping, raking, shoveling, general clean-up of work area and equipment, and physically handling materials and supplies.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid crane operator certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating Sany or Manitowoc cable cranes.
  • Strong understanding of crane operations, load charts, and safety regulations.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and at heights.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on cranes.
  • Must pass employee physical and drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in scrap metal industry.
  • Additional certifications related to crane operation or heavy equipment.

Physical Requirements
Ability to walk more than 1000 yards, sit or stand for extended periods of time, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb stairs and/or ladders, stoop, crawl, reach, handle, push, pull, twist, kneel, squat, see, speak, and hear.
Working Conditions
Aboard a Marine Vessel or dismantling yard. Required to work outside in all kinds of weather or in buildings without heating or air conditioning. Some tasks are dangerous, including removing lead, asbestos or chemicals.
