What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Gender Equality Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gender Equality Specialist, you need expertise in gender studies, policy analysis, and program development, often supported by a degree in social sciences or related fields. Familiarity with data analysis tools, monitoring and evaluation systems, and international frameworks such as CEDAW is typically required. Strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy skills help build partnerships and drive organizational change. These competencies are vital for advancing equitable policies and fostering inclusive environments in diverse settings.

What is a gender equality specialist?

A gender equality specialist is a professional who works to promote equal rights, opportunities, and treatment for people of all genders. They typically assess policies, develop programs, and provide training to eliminate gender-based discrimination and bias in workplaces, schools, and communities. Their work often involves research, advocacy, and collaboration with organizations to ensure gender perspectives are integrated into decision-making processes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in gender equality roles within organizations?

Professionals in gender equality roles often encounter challenges such as addressing unconscious bias, navigating organizational resistance to change, and ensuring that diversity initiatives are meaningfully integrated rather than tokenistic. They also frequently work to balance strategic planning with day-to-day advocacy and may need to collaborate across departments to drive policy changes. Building trust, fostering open communication, and demonstrating the business value of gender equality are key to overcoming these challenges and creating lasting impact.

AgileOne designs and develops global workforce and procurement solutions for Fortune 1000 companies. Our focused and consultative approach provides solutions that streamline business processes and deliver efficiencies to human resources, procurement, and suppliers.

The Foundation

We are the largest nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. Founded on a simple premise: people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the chance to live healthy, productive lives. We believe our employees should reflect the rich diversity of the global populations we aim to serve. We provide an exceptional benefits package to employees and their families which include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums, generous paid time off, paid family leave, foundation-paid retirement contribution, regional holidays, and opportunities to engage in several employee communities. *This position is a temporary contract assignment for 9 months and relocation will not be provided.

The Team

The mission of the Global Policy & Advocacy (GPA) division is to understand and shape the public policy debates affecting the foundation's work, build support for its major program and policy objectives, and develop partnerships and alliances that can advance the foundation's objectives nationally and globally. We work in close partnership with grantees, our colleagues in the Global Health, Global Development, Global Growth & Opportunity, U.S. and Gender Equality programs and Foundation Communications to build the environment in which all people have the opportunity to lead healthy and productive lives.

The Program Advocacy and Communications (PAC) team works in partnership with Program Strategy teams as well as teams within Global Policy and Advocacy (GPA) to achieve their policy and finance goals.
