Job description

Geotechnical Engineer (PE/GE) – Sacramento - Concord, CA

Twining Consulting, an innovative engineering, testing, and inspection company with over 100 years of history, is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Sacramento or Concord office. This position would cover both the Sacramento and Bay Areas of Northern California. This position is ideal for a motivated engineer with approximately 4 to 8 years of experience who is looking to grow technically while gaining exposure to client interaction and project delivery.

Responsibilities:
  • Support geotechnical investigations, including planning, field coordination, and logging borings as needed
  • Perform engineering analyses under the guidance of senior engineers, including shallow foundation design, deep foundation support (piles, drilled shafts), settlement and lateral earth pressure evaluations, and ground improvement recommendations
  • Prepare geotechnical reports, including boring logs, figures, and recommendations
  • Assist in proposal preparation, including scope development and cost estimates
  • Coordinate with field personnel, drillers, laboratory teams, and subcontractors during investigations
  • Perform site visits during construction oversight to observe conditions and ongoing construction activities with respect to Twining’s role
  • Travel to project sites and provide field support during construction, including coordinating with inspectors and contractors, reviewing field conditions, documenting observations, and assisting in resolving field-related geotechnical issues
  • Assist in on-site project coordination and participate in project meetings with clients, contractors, and design teams
  • Participate in construction observation activities (e.g., grading, foundation excavations, pile installation) as needed
  • Support client interactions and assist with business development efforts, including attending meetings and industry events
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (master’s degree with geotechnical emphasis preferred)
  • Minimum of 4 to 8 years of geotechnical engineering experience
  • Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license; GE license preferred
  • Strong foundation in geotechnical investigation, analysis, and reporting
  • Exposure to transportation or public agency projects (e.g., Caltrans, DSA, HCAI, counties/cities) preferred
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software such as Slide, LPile, or similar tools
  • Experience with common geotechnical analyses (bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability)
  • Basic understanding of seismic design considerations in California, including development of seismic design parameters and liquefaction analyses
  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility
  • Good communication skills with internal teams and clients
  • Willingness to engage in professional group meetings and potential client meetings to market Twining’s services
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
