Job description

Position Summary

The Gate Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial gate projects, including new construction, retrofits, and large-scale repairs. This role focuses exclusively on gate systems such as automated vehicle gates, pedestrian gates, and related access control components. The Estimator works closely with sales, project management, and field teams to ensure bids are complete, profitable, and aligned with project specifications.


Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Bidding
  • Prepare detailed estimates for commercial gate projects including:

    • Automated sliding and swing gates

    • Cantilever gate systems

    • Pedestrian gates and entry systems

    • Gate operators and automation components

  • Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents

  • Perform takeoffs and determine labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs

  • Develop scope of work, inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications

  • Submit accurate and timely proposals and bid packages

Technical Review
  • Analyze site conditions, project requirements, and constructability

  • Interpret blueprints, site plans, and electrical/low-voltage layouts

  • Ensure compliance with safety codes, UL requirements, and local regulations

  • Recommend value engineering options when applicable

Vendor & Cost Management
  • Source and negotiate pricing with vendors and suppliers for gate materials and operators

  • Maintain up-to-date pricing databases for materials and labor

  • Evaluate subcontractor bids when required

Sales Support & Client Interaction
  • Collaborate with sales team on bid strategy and pricing

  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and job walks as needed

  • Communicate with clients, general contractors, and project stakeholders for clarifications

  • Assist in closing bids and transitioning awarded projects to operations

Handoff & Coordination
  • Provide complete project handoff packages to project managers and field teams

  • Ensure scope, pricing, and expectations are clearly documented

  • Support operations with change orders and cost revisions as needed


Qualifications
  • 3+ years of estimating experience in commercial gates, fencing, access control, or related industry

  • Strong knowledge of automated gate systems, operators, and hardware

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specs, and site layouts

  • Experience with estimating software and Microsoft Excel

  • Understanding of low-voltage systems and electrical coordination is a plus
