What is a game server engineer?

Game Server Engineers are specialized software developers responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the backend infrastructure that powers multiplayer and online features in video games. They work on server-side logic, networking, scalability, and security to ensure smooth gameplay experiences for players worldwide. Their role often involves collaborating with game developers, network engineers, and QA teams to implement features like matchmaking, leaderboards, and real-time multiplayer interactions. Game Server Engineers are crucial for ensuring stability, low latency, and the ability to handle large numbers of concurrent users.

How does a game server engineer typically collaborate with game designers and client developers during the development process?

Game Server Engineers work closely with both game designers and client developers to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and client-side gameplay. They regularly participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss game mechanics, network protocols, and synchronization requirements. Effective communication with designers helps translate gameplay ideas into robust server features, while collaboration with client developers ensures data consistency and smooth player experiences. This teamwork is crucial for maintaining game stability and delivering new features efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game server engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Server Engineer, you need strong programming skills—typically in languages like C++, C#, or Java—along with a solid understanding of network protocols and real-time multiplayer systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), database management, version control systems, and experience with game engines or dedicated server frameworks are common technical requirements. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you efficiently diagnose issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, reliable, and engaging online gaming experiences.

Job description

Description
AmeriSave Mortgage Corp. has set the standard in online mortgage lending, with over $130 billion in funded loan volume. As one of the top rated, largest privately owned online mortgage lenders in the nation, our mission is to deliver beneficial, responsible home lending solutions with unwavering integrity, dedication and excellence. We leverage cutting edge technology and data driven strategies to provide exceptional service to our customers.
Our employees are the driving force behind our success. We believe in the power of a dynamic and talented workforce and creating an environment where your contributions are not just recognized, they're celebrated. Your success is our success, and we are seeking skilled professionals who are ready to bring their A-game, exceed benchmarks, and enhance the overall excellence of AmeriSave, while also growing and advancing their careers.
At AmeriSave, we're one team with one shared dream: to be the best. Let's redefine excellence together!
What We're Looking For:
AmeriSave is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to lead our Enterprise Technology & AI organization, software engineering, infrastructure, and security function responsible for our proprietary technology stack, including our Digital Mortgage platform and the systems that run our loan origination business end to end.
This is an executive role for a hands-on technology leader who has run large engineering organizations at scale, ideally within the mortgage industry or at a well-known lender, and who is equally credible discussing Azure architecture with a principal engineer, disaster recovery posture with an auditor, and technology strategy with the Board. You will own the reliability, security, scalability, and roadmap of the systems that power the company, while building and developing the engineering talent that maintains them. Seeking candidates with expertise and hands-on experience with Aloha software.
What You'll Do:
Engineering Organization Leadership: Lead a software engineering organization that designs, builds, and maintains AmeriSave's proprietary technology platforms, setting engineering standards, architecture direction, and delivery cadence across multiple product and platform teams.
Cloud & Database Infrastructure: Own the Azure cloud infrastructure and SQL Server database environments that run the company's proprietary systems, including architecture, cost management, performance tuning, and long-term platform strategy.
Reliability & Uptime: Hold accountability for system uptime and reliability in the high 99.99% range across production systems; drive the monitoring, incident response, root-cause analysis, and engineering discipline required to sustain that bar at scale.
Information Security: Own the organization's information security posture and security infrastructure, partnering with Compliance and Risk to ensure systems, data, and customer information are protected against evolving threats, and that the company meets regulatory and investor security requirements.
AI Strategy: Set direction for the company's AI strategy and investment, overseeing in-house AI initiatives (including proprietary AI-powered platform capabilities, automation, and applied AI/ML use cases) and evaluating where AI can responsibly improve efficiency, customer experience, and decisioning.
Networking Infrastructure: Own enterprise networking architecture, including data center, cloud, and remote/hybrid workforce connectivity, ensuring performance, security, and scalability of the network as the business grows.
Disaster Recovery: Own disaster recovery and business continuity planning for all critical systems, including recovery time/point objectives, failover testing, and readiness, ensuring the business can withstand and recover from major disruptions.
Capacity Planning: Lead capacity planning across infrastructure and applications, forecasting growth and ensuring systems scale ahead of business demand without over-provisioning cost.
Development Resource Management: Build, develop, and retain engineering talent and leadership; manage development resourcing and prioritization across competing business and technology initiatives; establish career paths and a strong engineering culture.
Executive Partnership & Communication: Partner with the CEO, CIO/CISO, and executive leadership team to translate business strategy into a technology roadmap; represent Technology in Board and investor conversations, and communicate complex technical topics in terms executives and non-technical stakeholders can act on.
Budget Ownership: Manage the technology budget, including infrastructure spend, tooling, and headcount, balancing innovation investment against operating efficiency.
What You'll Need:
Deep Industry Experience: 15+ years of progressive technology leadership experience, including 5+ years in a senior executive technology role (CTO, VP Engineering, or similar), preferably within the mortgage industry, and preferably with a well-known mortgage lender or financial services company.
Scale of Engineering Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading a software engineering organization that builds and maintains proprietary systems, not a primarily vendor/SaaS-managed environment.
Cloud & Database Expertise: Deep, hands-on expertise with Azure cloud infrastructure and SQL Server environments at production scale, including architecture, performance, security, and cost management.
Reliability Track Record: Proven track record of sustaining system uptime in the high 99.99% range for business-critical, customer-facing systems.
Security Expertise: Strong background in information security management and security infrastructure, including familiarity with financial services regulatory and audit expectations.
AI Experience: Experience directing applied AI/ML initiatives within a production engineering organization, translating AI capability into real business and customer outcomes.
Networking Expertise: Solid grounding in enterprise networking infrastructure, including cloud networking, hybrid connectivity, and network security.
Disaster Recovery Expertise: Experience owning disaster recovery and business continuity planning, including failover testing and recovery objectives, for mission-critical systems.
Capacity Planning Expertise: Demonstrated skill in infrastructure and application capacity planning, forecasting scale needs ahead of business growth.
Talent & Resource Management: Strong people leadership skills, with experience building, developing, and retaining engineering talent and managing development resourcing across a large, multi-team organization.
Executive Communication: Exceptional executive presence and communication skills; comfortable presenting technology strategy, risk, and performance directly to the CEO, Board, and investors.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
High-speed internet required for remote work, Cable or Fiber ONLY with the ability to connect via Ethernet. Minimum speeds: 70/30 Mbps (basic), 200-300/35-70 Mbps (shared), 500-1,000/100+ Mbps (heavy use).
