What Does a Game Developer Intern Do?

As a game developer intern, your job is to provide temporary support for the development of video games. In this role, you may work on one or more projects, experience various aspects of being a developer, and otherwise further your learning as a student. Internships in game development almost never last for the entirety of a development project. Creating games often takes years, and interns only work for a few months at most. Some larger companies may shuffle you through games at different stages of development to help you learn more about the changes that occur during the development process. This job title refers specifically to developing video games, but it is possible to find an internship helping create board games instead.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Game Developer Intern expect during their internship?

As a Game Developer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks ranging from coding gameplay mechanics and fixing bugs to assisting with level design and collaborating on team projects. Interns are often given the opportunity to contribute to both ongoing development tasks and specific features under the guidance of experienced developers. You'll likely work closely with artists, designers, and QA testers, gaining exposure to the full game development pipeline. The experience is designed to help you build your technical skills, understand agile workflows, and learn how to effectively communicate within a multidisciplinary team.

What does a Game Developer Intern do?

A Game Developer Intern assists in creating and testing video games under the supervision of experienced developers. Their tasks often include writing code, designing gameplay features, debugging, and collaborating with artists and designers. Interns are expected to learn industry-standard tools and development processes while contributing to real projects. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and can serve as a stepping stone to a career in game development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Developer Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming languages like C++ or C#, basic understanding of game design principles, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish standout interns in this role. These skills ensure interns can contribute to project development, adapt to challenges, and collaborate effectively within a dynamic game development environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Turn Key Solutions, LLC (www.TKS.LA) is a Managed Service Provider (MSP) that manages networks, phone systems & vendors for our regional business clients.  Are you going to school for a career in Information Technology, Sales & Marketing, or Business?    Would you like to earn credits and get real-world experience while part of a fast-paced, results-oriented I.T. consulting firm?   Are you ready to bring your "A Game" to a team of professionals who are looking for their next superstar protege?

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  We work hard while we're at work, but we do everything possible to get everyone home on time.   Full-time salary staff typically work 40 hr work weeks.   Our intern positions are typically very flexible - we know you've got classes and a crazy schedule.   We'll work with you!
You'll work closely with a team of I.T. pro's who are skilled at what they do.    They'll have a lot to offer you, but they will count on you to raise everyone's game to a new level.    Reliability, good teamwork & communication is huge to us, and we will do whatever it takes to help you feel comfortable, productive, and valued here.
Our office conditions are great - our tech staff enjoy their own work area with a pc, a company laptop for field work, all the coffee they can drink, and the support and respect of their goal-oriented coworkers.

COMPENSATION: Hourly pay is available for some intern positions, but not all.    This will depend on your qualifications, the specific intern position available at the time, and other factors.

COURSE CREDITS: Depends on your school, class, and conditions outside of our control.    We work with most schools, and are familiar with the typical process and requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/ABILITIES (i.e. these are not optional):

  • Strong proficiency with using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Current enrollment in IT or business classes, or completed program degree.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS/ABILITIES (i.e. not all are required, but the more you have the better):

  • Employment history with technical or office related duties.
  • Proficiency with basic network and computer terminology, on par with CompTIAA A+ or Network +
  • I.T. certifications from CompTIAA or Microsoft are awesome, if you have them!

Other Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move common computers and peripherals.
  • Reliable, insured transportation.

HOURS:  Part time or full time, we can usually work around your academic schedule.

BENEFITS:
Technical and professional training courses.

  • Constant on-the-job opportunities to learn new hardware, software, and best practices.
  • A team that wants to see you succeed and grow in your career, and provides you with the tools to do it.

Additionally, our full time employees have a comprehensive benefits package.
