Funnel Optimization information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a funnel optimization specialist?

To thrive as a Funnel Optimization Specialist, you need a solid understanding of digital marketing, data analytics, and conversion rate optimization, often supported by experience in A/B testing and a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, Optimizely, and marketing automation platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ). Strong analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating across teams. These competencies drive improved customer journeys, increase conversions, and maximize ROI for marketing efforts.

What is funnel optimization?

Funnel optimization is the process of analyzing and improving each stage of the customer journey, or 'funnel,' to increase the number of users who complete a desired action, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter. This involves identifying where potential customers drop off and implementing strategies—like A/B testing, improved messaging, or simplified navigation—to reduce friction and boost conversions. Funnel optimization helps businesses maximize the effectiveness of their marketing and sales efforts, resulting in higher revenue and better customer experiences.

What is the difference between Funnel Optimization vs Conversion Rate Optimization?

AspectFunnel OptimizationConversion Rate Optimization
FocusOptimizing entire sales or marketing funnels from awareness to purchaseImproving the percentage of visitors who take a desired action on a specific page
ScopeBroader, includes multiple touchpoints and stagesMore focused on specific pages or steps
MetricsFunnel drop-off rates, lead generation, sales volumeConversion rates, bounce rates, engagement metrics
Tools & TechniquesCustomer journey analysis, A/B testing across funnel stagesA/B testing, user behavior analysis, heatmaps

While both roles aim to improve user actions and business outcomes, Funnel Optimization focuses on enhancing the entire customer journey across multiple stages, whereas Conversion Rate Optimization concentrates on increasing conversions on specific pages or steps. Understanding these differences helps businesses allocate resources effectively for maximum growth.

What are the most common challenges faced by funnel optimization specialists when working with cross-functional teams?

Funnel optimization specialists often collaborate with marketing, sales, product, and analytics teams to improve user journeys and conversion rates. One common challenge is aligning priorities and strategies across departments, as each team may have different goals and success metrics. Effective communication and data sharing are essential to ensure everyone is working toward the same objectives. Additionally, navigating technical constraints or limited resources can require creative problem-solving and flexibility. Building strong relationships and maintaining transparency can help overcome these obstacles and lead to more successful funnel improvements.

Job description

Help shape how customers discover and choose a leading cobrand credit card program. In this role, you will set the acquisition strategy, partner closely across teams, and deliver profitable, responsible growth at scale.

As a Executive director card acquisition in the Cobrand credit card program team, you own new account acquisition strategy and portfolio growth, from opportunity sizing through execution, scaling, and performance management. You set the roadmap across offers, audiences, channels, and customer experience while partnering closely with a cobrand partner and cross-functional stakeholders. You establish strong operating discipline and measurement to deliver sustainable results aligned to risk appetite and control standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee strategies for acquiring new co-brand card customers. This includes making informed investment decisions, planning offers, and executing channel strategies to drive portfolio growth.

  • In partnership with the co-brand partner, set acquisition strategy across offers, audiences, channels, and customer experience to deliver annual and multi-year new account goals. Identify growth opportunities in underpenetrated customer segments and then work with key stakeholders to capture the opportunity while staying within Chase's risk appetite.

  • Lead annual planning and ongoing forecasting, including scenario planning and ROI trade-offs, to guide investment decisions and maximize portfolio returns.

  • Define offer, targeting, pricing and channel strategy for driving new account growth for the program, prioritize the roadmap and scale winning strategies with appropriate governance and monitoring.

  • Collaborate with co-brand partner to manage media efforts in upper funnel channels, including programmatic, social, and sponsored content, to boost card awareness and attract new customers.
  • Lead lifecycle credit risk / underwriting strategy in partnership with Risk, including segmentation, credit policy and decisioning enhancements, line management approaches, and ongoing portfolio actions aligned to risk appetite.

  • Drive lifecycle engagement strategies (activation, early spend ramp, retention/reactivation, and sustainable usage) in partnership with Marketing and Product, aligned to profitability and risk outcomes.

  • Establish KPI definitions and operating cadence (dashboards, performance reviews, executive reporting) to track results, diagnose performance drivers, surface trade-offs, and drive course-corrections.

  • Build and execute a disciplined test-and-learn program (e.g., champion/challenger), defining hypotheses, success metrics and guardrails, interpreting results, and partnering with teams to operationalize and monitor changes post-launch.

  • Coordinate cross-functional execution with program leads across Product, Marketing, Analytics, Operations, Technology, Finance, Risk, Fraud, Pricing, and Compliance-ensuring clear milestones, owners, dependencies, and delivery timelines.

  • Partner with the co-brand partner on portfolio performance reviews, strategic priorities, and in-market execution while maintaining risk and control standards. Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to influence and drive key business decisions, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives; lead and mentor a team of 2-3 individuals.

Required qualifications, capabilities and skills

  • 10+ years of work experience with a background in credit card marketing, strategy, and knowledge of card economics
  • Subject Matter Expert for key acquisition tactics and channels including; paid digital, owned channels, affiliate, direct mail, in-app/on-site, and partner channels.

  • Experience in credit card acquisitions.

  • Excellent analytical skills with mastery of P&L drivers and risk management.

  • Familiar with emerging technology, digital and mobile trends
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including unit economics, forecasting, scenario planning, ROI trade-offs, and investment prioritization.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional decision-making with senior stakeholders in a highly matrixed environment, influencing outcomes without direct authority.

  • Strong operating discipline: governance, documentation, controls, and performance management rigor, including KPI frameworks/dashboards and executive readouts.
