What does a functional safety manager do?

A Functional Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of safety standards within product development, especially in industries like automotive, industrial automation, and aerospace. They ensure that systems and processes comply with relevant safety regulations such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. Their role includes conducting risk assessments, coordinating safety activities across teams, and managing documentation to verify that products meet all safety requirements before release.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional safety manager?

To thrive as a Functional Safety Manager, you need a deep understanding of safety standards (such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508), risk assessment, and safety lifecycle processes, usually backed by an engineering degree and relevant experience. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (like FMEA, FTA), safety case management systems, and certifications such as TÜV Functional Safety Engineer are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are vital soft skills for guiding teams and interfacing with stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure that complex systems are designed and maintained to meet rigorous safety requirements, minimizing risk and ensuring regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by functional safety managers when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Functional Safety Managers often encounter challenges in aligning different departments, such as engineering, quality assurance, and project management, to ensure compliance with safety standards like ISO 26262. Each team may have unique priorities and technical languages, which can lead to communication gaps and differing interpretations of safety requirements. Overcoming these challenges requires strong leadership, clear documentation, and regular cross-functional meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page regarding safety goals. Additionally, ensuring that all team members are adequately trained and aware of the latest safety protocols is essential for project success.

What is the difference between Functional Safety Manager vs Safety Engineer?

AspectFunctional Safety ManagerSafety Engineer
CertificationsISO 26262, IEC 61508, CSNEISO 26262, IEC 61508, CSNE
Work EnvironmentLeadership roles in safety management, project oversightTechnical safety analysis, risk assessments
Industry UsageAutomotive, industrial, aerospaceAutomotive, manufacturing, process industries

The main difference is that a Functional Safety Manager oversees safety programs and manages teams, while a Safety Engineer focuses on technical safety analysis and risk assessments. Both roles require similar certifications and are integral to safety-critical industries, but their responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

At the heart of product innovation and development, our Systems Engineering Department transforms market demands into safe, certifiable, and competitive solutions and architectures. By collaborating closely with software, hardware, safety, and certification teams, we ensure every product meets the highest standards while adapting to fast‑evolving market needs. Our mission is to enable seamless human‑robot collaboration and deliver solutions that are safe, compliant, and ready for the future. Join us to shape the next generation of human‑robot systems by owning system‑level requirements, integration, and alignment, with architectural responsibilities as needed. If you thrive in cross‑functional teamwork and technical excellence, you’ll find extraordinary opportunities with us.

Your Mission & Challenges
  • Own Safety Strategy: Drive the functional safety strategy across the full product portfolio. Establish lifecycle processes, safety plans, and governance structures aligned with IEC 61508 and ISO 13849.

  • Lead & Develop: Build and coach associated safety engineers across product lines—set priorities, establish safety plans and track the execution, and coach safety engineers hands‑on from first risk assessment (RA, HARA) through to safety case closure.

  • Compile the Safety Case: Own the safety case methodology end‑to‑end. Drive HARA, FMEA, FTA, and STPA campaigns, ensure requirement derivation, traceability, and verification across HW/SW/system, and deliver defensible safety argumentation per product line.

  • Drive Safety Concepts: Based on strong analysis and cross‑functional work you generate and ensure smooth implementation of safety concepts in the products.

  • Represent Safety Externally: Act as primary safety interface toward executive leadership, certification authorities, notified bodies, and auditors. Align safety evidence delivery with certification timelines.

  • Shape the Regulatory Response: Monitor the evolving regulatory landscape (EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, AI Act, ISO/TR 23482) and proactively adapt the safety approach. Drive cross‑project lessons learned.

What We Can Look Forward To
  • Education: MSc or PhD in Systems Engineering, EE, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field. TÜV FSEng, CFSE, or Exida certification strongly preferred.

  • Track Record: 3+ years in functional safety engineering, ≥2 years as active FSM — combining governance oversight with hands‑on project contribution across safety planning, competence management, and safety case compilation.

  • Standards Mastery: Deep expertise in IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ISO 10218. Working familiarity with ISO 26262, SOTIF, and EU Machinery Regulation / CE marking.

  • Safety Reasoning & Methods: HARA, FMEA, FTA, STPA, ETA, reliability modeling, structured argumentation (GSN/CAE). Proficient in Medini, APIS IQ, DOORS, Polarion, or equivalent.

  • Leadership & Communication: Proven track record coaching safety engineers in a fast‑paced, multi‑product environments. Able to convey safety rationale to engineers, managers, and auditors alike. Experience with autonomous or AI‑enabled robotic systems is a strong differentiator.
